Dear Community,
After 44 years of service, the Hotel Ottumwa will close its doors on May 31. While two developers expressed interest in the property, we were ultimately unable to reach a viable agreement regarding its future.
The Schwartz family purchased the hotel in 1982, initially naming it the Parkview Plaza. What began with the Knights of Columbus as our first tenant grew into Jim Schwartz’s vision to fully restore the Hotel Ottumwa. Over the decades, the hotel became a cornerstone of hospitality for weddings, reunions, and special occasions, with Tom Tom Tap and the Second Street Cafe serving as beloved gathering places for our community.
Jim Schwartz was a dedicated leader who believed deeply in the city of Ottumwa. His children contributed to the restoration over the years, and Lori Schulte, who joined the team in 1983, became a partner in 2001.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to our employees and customers for your years of support. We will remain open during regular hours through May 31:
- Lobby Cafe: Daily, 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- Tom-Tom Tap: Daily, 11 a.m. – 1 a.m.
- Hotel Reservations: Available through May 30.
- Banquets: Please contact Lori Schulte for remaining availability.
- DoorDash: Storefront operations will continue as usual.
In these final weeks, we invite you to visit us and share your stories. We hope you will cherish the memories made here over the last 40 years. While the future of the building is currently unknown, we hope it remains a contributing presence in the community. We will share further information as it becomes available.
It has been our sincere pleasure to serve you.
