On this day, September 8, in Florida history... a fleet of Spanish ships dropped anchor off a stretch of unfamiliar coastline, and a settlement was born that would outlast empires. ⚓️🌅

In 1565, Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés led roughly 600 soldiers, sailors, and colonists ashore near what is now St. Augustine. He named the site in honor of Saint Augustine of Hippo, whose feast day had just passed when his fleet first sighted land. Within weeks, Menéndez's forces would clash with a nearby French colony, but the settlement he founded that day endured, becoming the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the continental United States, predating Jamestown by 42 years and Plymouth by 55.

Four hundred sixty-one years later, the narrow streets and coquina walls of St. Augustine still trace back to that single afternoon on the sand. What is it about walking those old streets that makes the past feel so close?
