A bit late, but please bear with me on a special story I'd like to share regarding the legendary, Chris Barbosa and the "original" Freestyle File.
While in Colombia this past weekend with Nyasia, reading about someone, we humbly consider a friend pass away, filled us with emotions. Naya made sure to mention the loss of this legend and dedicated her show in his honor...
Besides being an ultimate fan for his major contribution to music, we've never met a more kinder and humble person EVER. We've crossed paths at shows either with the original File or with Naya and was always such a joy to talk with.
In May 2005, I received an email that really just blew us away. He wrote something along the lines of: "He read that *The Freestyle File Radio Show was coming to an end. That the show was impacting for showcasing live mixes, edits, chatroom, and artist interviews. He asked if we would allow him to be the last guest for the final show, that he wanted to be a part of something he thought was an important part of the genre. "...
First of all, knowing that this LEGEND knew about the show from the beginning was mind-boggling.
I had to reread that email more than a few times.
So, on June 18, 2005, Chris Barbosa took the subway to Brooklyn and hosted a 6 hour LIVE with myself, Dayer, and Nyasia... We interviewed him, and I mixed all his tracks live while he sat in front of the computer and interacted with the fans in the chatroom. We (nervously) debuted an edit mix of "On the Upside" by Xena and gave nothing but praise. We spoke on and off air, telling amazing and funny stories. It was one of the best days I e ever had personally. It was an honor to have him on the show, to say the least, and will NEVER forget that show.
This picture was taken that night in Brooklyn and signed a blank CD for me. We will never forget his kindness, humbleness, and amazing stories about how he made certain tracks.
To a TRUE LEGEND, who will always be known for the start of a sound that can never be duplicated. The music industry suffered a major loss for sure.
Our condolences to his family.
Chris Barbosa, you will be truly missed...
