This morning, I was drinking my coffee, checking email and, yes, doing a little mindless scrolling when this cartoon popped up.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about taking intentional photos and actually printing them.

Cell phones are great. We can do almost everything with them, including taking some pretty great pictures. But there are downsides.

You take a sweet picture of your one-year-old and later notice the pile of toys and laundry in the background.

You print that favorite photo of your love and it looks much better on the screen than in print.

And the last photo you took of Grandma is lost somewhere between a picture of your dog and that amazing meal you had at a restaurant downtown.

With the holidays coming, keep taking the quick candid shots, but also make time for a few intentional photos.

Check the background.
Straighten the rings.
Look for good light.
Get closer with your feet instead of zooming.

Then pick a few and have them printed by a GOOD lab, not a big box store. Hang them on the wall or set them on a shelf where you will see them every day.

Or find a good local photographer and invest in the memories. Years from now, you and your family will still be looking at those photos and telling the stories that go with them.

Earlier this month I photographed a BUNCH of dogs at a Dog Paw-ty event. I'll be honest, it's the first time I photographed dogs other than my own.

Here are a few of my favorites.

A few lessons learned:
* Plan extra editing time for removing leashes, etc.
* If possible, set up where there are fewer distractions
* Be sure to give the dogs time to explore and sniff before trying to take their photo

Overall, I think it went pretty well. I even made it to the very end before any dogs 'marked' my table cloth. Thankfully, it's machine washable!

Recently, I photographed the West O Chamber's Wine Walk in Downtown Elkhorn. These photos aren't photos that help their message about the walk, but I liked them.
