The year was 1934. America was deep in the Great Depression. Ogden Mayor Harm Peery looked around at his city and decided it needed something to hold onto. Something to bring people out from behind closed doors and into the streets.

Something joyful, even in the middle of hard times. So, he built a celebration!

He had no way of knowing that more than 90 years later, that summer celebration would grow into the largest rodeo in Utah.

Or that thousands of fans would pack Spencer Fox Eccles Pioneer Stadium every July!

He just knew his people needed a reason to come together. Now more than ever, they still do. And every July, they show up in droves!

That’s how you know a tradition was built on a real sense of community and commitment. The tradition holds… sometimes for 90+ years!

Never been to a rodeo? You’ve probably heard your fair share of myths and tall tales. Let’s set the record straight!

Myth: “Rodeo is mostly a lot of bull riding.”
Fact: A full PRCA rodeo features eight events, including ba****ck riding, saddle bronc, barrel racing, team roping and more. The full show runs two hours or more!

Myth: “You need to know all about the sport to enjoy spectating.”
Fact: First-timers walk out as some of the loudest fans in the parking lot. The action is fast, the stakes are high and the energy is electrifying.

Myth: “Being a rodeo athlete seems like a pretty simple job.”
Fact: Top PRCA competitors travel to 70-plus rodeos per season and compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. They train like elite athletes… because they are!

OPD is so much more than a rodeo. It's also a training ground for the next generation!

Here's how we're investing in the cowboys and cowgirls of tomorrow:

1️⃣ The Jr. Posse Jamboree kicks off rodeo week on July 11 at Spencer Fox Eccles Pioneer Stadium, giving young riders a chance to show Ogden what they've got.

2️⃣ Mutton Bustin' runs every rodeo night at 7 p.m., putting kids ages 5 to 8 on the back of a sheep for the wildest eight seconds of their young lives. Registration opens June 5 at the OPD offices. Spots fill fast.

3️⃣ The Special Kids Rodeo on July 14 at Lorin Farr Park gives children with special needs a real rodeo experience, including horseback rides, roping activities and memories that last a lifetime.

The Western way of life gets passed down one kid at a time. We're proud to be part of that!

We're throwing it back to one of the most beloved moments at … Mutton Bustin'. Little cowboys and cowgirls between the ages of 5 and 8 hold on for dear life as they ride a sheep across the arena. It’s equal parts pure chaos and pure joy!

And registration for the 2026 season opens June 5. 🎉

Does your kiddo weigh less than 55 pounds and have a little cowboy spirit in their soul? This is their moment!

Some people live the Western way of life in such a way that they carry it forward for everyone who comes after them. These folks are the 2026 honorees of the Utah Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum!

Please plan to join us Saturday June 27 at 7pm, when the museum hosts its annual induction ceremony at Union Station right here in Ogden. 🏛️

This honor goes to the ranchers, artists, champions, musicians, writers and everyday Utahns who have spent their lives embodying the independence and grit that built this state.

Come to Union Station next month and help us honor them. These are our people, after all, and they surely deserve a packed house! 🤠
