There’s something about Julian that always makes a portrait feel a little less like a portrait and a little more like a scene from a movie.

We photographed Lex out in the dry grass and rolling hills as the light started changing, and everything just fell into place—the white dress, the wind, the clouds, that ridiculous sunset, and then a quick wardrobe change that gave the second half of the session a completely different energy.

This is still one of those shoots I love going back to.

Yesterday we spent the day with the Ofoegbu family at their home in Los Angeles.

They’re also part of our spiritual family, which made this one feel a little more personal. There’s something special about photographing people you already share that connection with and getting to see them simply be a family in the place where their everyday life happens.

We made the polished portraits, but we also left room for everything in between—the kids being kids, Mom cracking up, quiet moments by the window, and three generations together under one roof.

That’s the stuff I want to remember. Not just how everyone looked, but how this season of their family actually felt.

Some celebrations don’t need a ceremony to feel like a wedding.

Gigi and Agustin closed out 2023 surrounded by the people they love, under string lights, dressed in black, with a little bit of romance, a little bit of darkness, and a whole lot of personality. From the details tucked into the trees to the long tables waiting for everyone to gather, this was the kind of night that felt completely their own.

And that’s what I love about event coverage. It isn’t just photographing what happened. It’s preserving what it felt like—the laughter, the quiet moments between two people, the little details someone spent hours putting together, and everything that happens when nobody is paying attention to the camera.

There are weddings that stick with you because of the venue, the light, or some crazy moment that happened during the day. And then there are weddings where everything just seemed to come together.

Looking back at Rochelle and Leo’s wedding from November 13, 2021, this one had a little bit of everything I love about photographing weddings.

The nerves while getting ready. That first look and the reactions that followed. A ceremony surrounded by the vineyards and Temecula hills. Sneaking away between the vines for portraits. And then that ridiculous California sunset showed up right when we needed it.

Monte De Oro gave us one hell of a backdrop, but Rochelle and Leo made the photographs.

Five years later, I still love going through this wedding.

Ten years ago, we went out to Pala with Sandy and Vanessa with no wedding to document, no milestone to celebrate, and no client brief to follow.

Just an idea.

This was January 2016, back when I was still figuring out exactly what I wanted Black Rider Studios to become. I knew I loved portraits, but I also knew I didn’t want everything I photographed to simply look like a portrait. I wanted to build little worlds. Something cinematic, strange, romantic, maybe even a little unreal.

So we grabbed some dresses, headed into the mountains and made something purely because we wanted to make it.

Looking back at these now, there are plenty of things I’d photograph differently with everything I’ve learned over the last decade. But that’s also why I love them. You can see the beginnings of ideas that would eventually become a big part of how I photograph today.

And yes… there were lions.

Because apparently even in 2016 I didn’t know how to keep things simple.

Yep, that opening was wrong. Here’s the corrected version:

Yesterday was one of those wedding days that felt like it had its own soundtrack.

Azcaxochtl and Juan started their morning separately in Chula Vista—Azcaxochtl getting ready at an Airbnb while Juan got ready at home. From there, everyone made their way to Rose Creek Cottage 1900 in Pacific Beach, where they finally came together to say their vows surrounded by family and friends.

After the ceremony, we headed to Liberty Station in Point Loma for their wedding portraits, chasing architecture, shadows, and pockets of that beautiful San Diego light before heading south to Casa Limón in Bonita.

And then the party started.

Live music, cowboy hats, a packed dance floor, and the kind of celebration where sitting down apparently wasn’t part of the plan.

Here’s a little preview from Azcaxochtl and Juan’s wedding day. From Chula Vista to Pacific Beach, Point Loma to Bonita—we got to follow their story all over San Diego.

Six years of marriage. A little boy. And a life that looks a whole lot different than it did when they first said “I do.”

The Sedanos came out to Pacific Beach to celebrate their 6th anniversary on 9/22/26, and instead of only photographing the two of them, they brought along one of the best things those six years have given them—their little family.

As fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses, their bond and commitment to each other and their faith was such a beautiful part of what we got to witness during this session.

We spent the evening climbing around the rocks, chasing that warm San Diego light, letting their little guy be himself, and making photographs of what six years of marriage looks like today.

Because anniversaries aren’t only about remembering where you started.

Sometimes they’re about looking around and realizing just how much you’ve built together.

Happy 6th anniversary to the Sedanos. 🖤

There’s something about the quiet of the woods that makes everything else disappear.

Yesterday, Naomi and Joel stepped away from the noise and into the trees of Pauma Valley for their engagement session. No city streets. No crowds. Just the two of them surrounded by deep greens, warm light, and the kind of stillness that lets you forget there’s a camera nearby.

These two made it easy. The way they hold each other, laugh together, and settle into those quiet moments says more than anything we could have posed.

Congratulations, Naomi and Joel. This is only the beginning, and we’re honored to preserve a little piece of the road to “I do.”

There comes a point when you realize family portraits aren’t really about today.

They’re about the years from now… when these moments become the photographs everyone reaches for.

Yesterday evening, we spent sunset with the Holguín family along the cliffs of Del Mar, watching the light soften as three generations stood together. Parents who built a home, children finding their own paths, and a grandmother whose love can be seen without a single word being spoken.

Time has a way of changing faces, adding laughter lines, and growing families. That’s exactly why we believe photographs matter. They become reminders of who we were, who we loved, and the people who helped shape our story.

Thank you, Holguín family, for trusting Black Rider Studios to preserve another chapter of your family’s legacy. We can’t wait to share the rest.

Eight years ago, Nancy and Henry trusted us to tell the story of one of the most important days of their lives.

This week, they invited us back—not to photograph a wedding, but the beautiful life they’ve built together.

Watching couples become parents is one of the greatest privileges of what we do. Time has a way of changing everything… except the love that started it all. Now there are little hands to hold, little feet running through the gardens, and a family story that’s still being written.

The UCR Botanical Gardens gave us the perfect backdrop to slow down, laugh together, and capture the quiet moments that often become the most treasured memories years from now.

To the Serna family, thank you for allowing us to continue documenting your journey. Eight years later, it still means the world to us that you continue to trust Black Rider Studios with your memories.
