The design draws on the historical legacy of Juneteenth and the Underground Railroad. When freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, sighting the date and gray stars on the design and incorporating a contemporary colors scheme with a white star in the middle for hope.
According to legend, a safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging from a clothesline or windowsill. These quilts were embedded with a kind of code, so that by reading the shapes and motifs sewn into the design, an enslaved person on the run could know the area’s immediate dangers or even where to head next. This design is a log cabin quilt square which code meant that “Seek shelter now, the people here are safe to speak with” to travelers on their journey north.
