LAND AND SEA IS A SMALL PRESS BASED IN OAKLAND CALIFORNIA RUN BY MARIA OTERO AND CHRIS DUNCAN. LAND AND SEA BEGAN DURING THE FINAL DAYS OF 2009 AND HAVE CONSISTENTLY BEEN PUBLISHING SMALL EDITIONS OF BOOKS AND RECORDS BY ARTISTS FROM THE BAY AREA AND BEYOND. UNDER THE SAME MONIKER, CHRIS AND MARIA ORGANIZE GATHERINGS THAT CELEBRATE THE ARTISTS THEY WORK WITH AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITIES THEY ARE A P

ART OF. LAND AND SEA ARE PROUD TO HAVE THEIR EDITIONS IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE SFMOMA, THE BERKELEY ART MUSEUM, STANFORD LIBRARY, AND THE NYMOMA. DURING 2015, LAND AND SEA OPENED ITS STUDIO SPACE IN OAKLAND CALIFORNIA FOR GATHERINGS THAT WILL COMBINE VISUAL, SONIC, PERFORMANCE AND LITERARY ARTS, AS WELL AS POP-UPS FOR OTHER SMALL PUBLISHERS AND CULTURAL FACILITATORS. IT IS OUR HOPE TO PRESENT A SERIES OF DYNAMIC PROGRAMS THAT ARE NOT OFTEN SEEN IN OUR AREA. WE ARE DEVELOPING AN OPEN SPACE FOR EXPERIMENTATION AND FAILURE, TO GIVE YOUNG THINKERS AND MAKERS EARLY OPPORTUNITIES TO COMMUNICATE, AND MORE SEASONED MAKERS A SPACE TO CHALLENGE THEIR COMFORT ZONE. EVENTS AT LAND AND SEA WILL GENERALLY BE FREE TO ATTEND, HOWEVER IT IS LIKELY THERE WILL BE OBJECTS, EDITIONS AND FOOD TO PURCHASE. AS WELL, IF WE ARE HOSTING PERFORMERS FROM OUT OF TOWN, WE WILL PROBABLY PASS A HAT AROUND. AS A SPACE, LAND AND SEA WILL TAKE A STANCE TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD, BY USING OUR LITTLE PLATFORM TO PRIMARILY PRESENT WOMEN, LGBTQ AND FOLKS OF COLOR. LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Rites/Rituals, Sacrament, Anointing of The Sick
A trilogy of short films which explore the parallels between the recognizable rituals of popular organized religions and the latent rites subliminally and repeatedly performed within the constructs of an intimate relationship. Created over the course of three years, the trilogy relays a non-linear narrative rooted in repetition, with original scores composed by HIDE member Seth Sher.

Saturday 4/29 Black Flame Exhibit AT LAND AND SEA 4-8PM
Black Flame is an audio and visual installation comprised of material (paper) and ethereal (breath) elements exploring the space created by invisibility or marginalization as an opportunity for personal transformation. A series of photographs of a fe**sh garment dance like fire, fanned by a desire for autonomy and a decided, determined
resistance.

ABOUT JOHN BENDER:
John Bender recorded voraciously between 1978 and 1980 at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. While I Don't Remember Now / I Don't Want To Talk About It, his first album from 1980, is impossibly rare and the man behind the music remains shrouded in self-imposed mystery, the real surprise is that it has taken 35+ years for listeners to discover Bender's warm, art-damaged immediacy. https://www.superiorviaduct.com/collections/john-bender

John Bender is without any doubt, the protagonist, if not the inventor of a whole musical-genre known as Cold Minimal Wave/Synth. His synthesizer-sounds already carried elements of techno and acid-beats while techno was still to be invented a decade later. His voice and his partially sentimental and mourning lyrics made his music to something outstanding and extraordinary, unheard before in this mixture. His three self-released Lp’s „I don’t remember now (1980), Plaster Falling (1981) and Pop Surgery (1983) are a must-have for every serious collector and interested person in such cold-wave/minimal-synth/techno-sounds.(vinyl on demand)

THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY, JANUARY 28TH. 8PM

DANISHTA RIVERO
ALEX VITTUM
$5-$10 SLIDING SCALE/PLEASE BRING CASH
Alex Vittum performs electroacoustic techno and ambient music as Intervales. He uses found objects combined with drum machines and field recordings to create polyrhythmic soundscapes.

Danishta Rivero is a musician and sound artist based in Oakland. She is a vocalist who performs on electronics and the Hydrophonium, a water-based electro-acoustic percussion instrument she created. Rivero performs solo as well as with her electro-acoustic duo Voicehandler with percussionist Jacob Felix Heule. She is also half of Las Sucias, a feminist noise reggeatón duo with Alexandra Buschman.

From Chris Duncan:

hello please join me next sunday, October 30th from 3-5pm at the Headlands Center for the Arts for the culmination of my project space residency.

The show is called THESE ARE NOT FALL COLORS. it will be comprised of all new site specific sun exposure paintings, two large scale rubbings on fabric and a sound piece. The sound work and the rubbings on fabric were done in an ocean cave about a 30 minute hike north of Rodeo Beach. Just about everyday for the past three months I would hike to the cave, listen to the ocean, think and respond to what has become a very special place to me.
The Headlands has truly impacted me..hard to explain but totally real.
I invite you to see the physical and sonic repercussions of my time spent there.
Theres a dinner at 5:30 as well.
Come hang and eat. Theres a good chance I will perform as well.
Hope to see you.
