🎉 A little over a year ago, the Henry J reopened its doors after nearly two decades of silence.

Originally built in 1915 as the Oakland Municipal Auditorium, this Beaux-Arts landmark on the shore of Lake Merritt had sat empty since 2004. But in January 2024, after years of renovation and community advocacy, the lights came back on.

Today, the Henry J hosts:
→ Concerts and performances across three venues
→ Conferences and community gatherings
→ Family experiences and cultural celebrations
→ The next generation of Oakland stories

This building belongs to The Town. And The Town is back inside it. ✨

🌹⚡ 57 TIMES. That's how many times the Grateful Dead performed at what is now the Henry J between 1967 and 1989.

From psychedelic experiments to legendary jams, the Oakland Municipal Auditorium was a home base for the Dead during some of their most creative years. The building's 7,000-person arena and unique acoustics made it one of the Bay Area's premier venues for live music.

Jerry Garcia. Phil Lesh. Bob Weir. The music that defined an era echoed through these halls more than any other band in the building's history.

The Henry J has always been where the music lives. And the music is still here. 🎸

🎵 The Town has produced some of the most iconic sounds in music history. Here's just a sample of what Oakland has given the world:

🎸 Tower of Power — formed right here in Oakland in 1968. Still the tightest horn section in the game.
🎤 Green Day — Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt got their start in the East Bay punk scene before taking over the world.
🎶 MC Hammer — born in Oakland. Can't touch this? We did.
🎵 En Vogue — the Grammy-nominated R&B group formed in Oakland in 1990.
🎤 Too Short — the Bay Area rap pioneer who helped define West Coast hip-hop.
🎶 Raphael Saadiq — born and raised. From Tony! Toni! Toné! to solo legend.
🎵 Tupac Shakur — lived in Oakland. The influence is still felt worldwide.

The Henry J is proud to keep that legacy alive — hosting the artists who carry The Town's sound forward. 🎧🔥

🌹 For 35 years, Ballet Folklórico México Danza has been more than a dance company — they've been a cultural anchor for the Bay Area. 💃🎺

What started as an after-school program in Hayward to keep kids engaged and connected to their roots has grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that welcomes dancers of ALL ages and nationalities. Under the influence of Amalia Hernández — the "Queen of Mexican Folklore" — México Danza keeps tradition alive with passion, discipline, and breathtaking artistry.

On June 14, the Henry J hosts their 35th anniversary celebration:
🎵 Live mariachi music
💃 Classic folklórico favorites — from Jalisco to Veracruz
👗 Vibrant traditional costumes that tell a story with every step
🎉 A noche de gala — bring your best outfit

This is Mexican heritage, alive and electrifying, right here in The Town.

🕊️ On December 28, 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the stage of what is now the Henry J and addressed 7,000 people.

The speech marked the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. In the same auditorium where Oakland gathered for music and celebration, they gathered that night for justice, progress, and hope.

Dr. King's voice echoed through the Beaux-Arts hall — the same hall where, just a few years later, a new generation of Oakland activists would organize, strategize, and demand change.

This speech would later be listed as an influence in the tactics employed by the Black Panther Party.

The Henry J has always been more than a venue. It's where The Town comes together. 🤝

👑 On June 3, 1956 — 70 years ago this week — Elvis Presley stepped onto the stage at what was then the Oakland Municipal Auditorium.

He was 21 years old. "Heartbreak Hotel" was tearing up the charts. And The King played The Town — not once, but twice. He returned on October 27, 1957 for another sold-out show.

The building that is now the Henry J has hosted legends across every era of American music — from Elvis to Bob Marley, from the Grateful Dead to Chaka Khan. The stage has seen 110 years of history, and the stories keep being written.

What era of the Henry J would you want to time-travel to? 🎤⏰
