Aloha Kumu Hula and Alakaʻi,

Dr. Bruce Kaʻimiloa Chrisman, at age 82, has spent the past 50 years studying and doing Hawaiian arts and crafts of the past and is very much wanting to pass on what he knows.

On SATURDAY, APRIL 5th, he will be hosting a special (free) seminar covering traditional making and materials of instruments as done in the past, with particular focus on the intricacies of making ipu heke in those older times, which can be done today as well. In the 1980s and 1990s, Kaʻimiloa focused on the nearly extinct Hawaiian gourd, grew hundreds of them, studied every old-time ipu heke he could find in museums and private hands, studied antique photographs, and made over 50 traditional ipu heke.

Manoa Heritage Center is graciously hosting this 2-hr select seminar from 1pm-3pm. Please consider signing up for this rare opportunity to spend time with this expert whose great desire is to pass on his knowledge to those directly and deeply involved in hula. Bring your own ipu heke to show Kumu Kaʻimiloa!
