WHY I DO, WHAT I DO

Recently, I got a text from someone who has been a customer, teammate, and most importantly good friend of mine for 20 years.

Sometimes, you need to be reminded WHY the details, the personal touch, the imagination, are so important.
I am always inspired to go for “memorable” instead of “expected” because the reaction (even 8 years later) makes it a better goal.

This is the illustrated version of what he wrote and how it made me feel.

Cheers, Gerry

Celebrating on the 1st day

ON THE 1st DAY OF CHRISTMAS,
HOCKEY GAVE TO US…
THE MIRACLE ON ICE

In 1980 we were given a gift proving that hope, and dreams, can come true. We refer to it as “The Miracle on Ice” because it would take a miracle for it to happen. But it did. It proved to everyone, that preparation and timing, combined with luck, and sprinkled with belief, could win. Reality bested fantasy when a bunch of amateur college players beat the “big red machine” of the USSR who were amateurs in name only.

Christmas is referred to as the time of miracles, so let’s celebrate hockey’s miracle. February 22nd, 1980 in the village of Lake Placid in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. The 1980 Winter Olympics will forever be associated with that game. It lifted the spirit of a nation but on a bigger stage, it gave people all over the world, hope.

Hope is the basis of all dreams. Dream big.

Dreaming on the 2nd day of Hockey Christmas

ON THE 2nd DAY OF CHRISTMAS,
HOCKEY GAVE TO US
DREAMERS & HOCKEY DREAMS

Some have a dream to play hockey in a obscure or REMOTE location with limited ice availability. They never let temperature, borders or distance defeat them. With hope, and stick in hand, they travel far, to fulfill their dreams.

Some have a dream to take their love of the game and play, despite SPECIAL NEEDS, PHYSICAL DISABILITY or INJURY. They ignore their detractors and take the ice with passion and defiance. They redefine the use of “limits” and “obstacle” by refusing “no” as an answer. With passion and excellence, they glorify the game.

Some dreamers are discouraged or obstructed on the basis of SEXUAL IDENTITY. They create paths and safe spaces for themselves and others. They create team and structure to support each other, and foster encouragement and acceptance.

Some dreamers are told their RACE is unwelcome in the game. They are told they should not, or cannot play. They defy the prejudice and prove the exception to the rule, proving dreams are bigger than bigots. They rise and offer hope to all dreamers.

Some dream about the game, but are routinely discouraged or prevented because of GENDER bias and discrimination. They continue to silence the critics, build their own legacy, and inspire new generations. Yes, they can… and do.

When you combine all the dreamers together, you’ll find they are the better part of us.
Their “Dream Jar” is a puck back.

They are our team. They are us. They are hope.

Putting on the foil for the 3rd day of Hockey Christmas

ON THE 3rd DAY OF CHRISTMAS,
HOCKEY GAVE TO US…
THREE BROTHERS

And, old time hockey would never be the same.

Thanks to the movie Slap Shot (1977) the hockey was introduced to the legendary characters of,
#16 Jack Hanson (portrayed by David Hanson)
#17 Steve Hanson (portrayed by Steve Carlson)
#18 Jeff Hanson (portrayed by Jeff Carlson)

Player/Coach Reggie Dunlop (played by Paul Newman) tried to save hockey in Charlestown or find new teams for the most colorful roster in cinematic history.

One word sums up the mayhem, “Scouts?”

Standing Ovation for #4

ON THE 4TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS,
HOCKEY GAVE TO US…
BOBBY ORR

#4 IN YOUR PROGRAM
#1 IN YOUR HEARTS

For those of you too young to know. Have you watched old footage of NHL’ers skating and wondered “when” the game evolved to the modern skating style? It’s not a “when” as much as it is a “who.” Bobby Orr, that’s who.
If you’ve never seen Bobby play, watch footage of him begin behind his net and go through the other skaters as if they are standing still.

Can you imagine Bobby Orr if he had the equipment, especially the skates, of today?

Who, not when.

HIS game, changed THE game.

What can I write about about Robert Gordon Orr that hasn’t already been said?
Bobby Orr let his hockey speak for itself. His character and dignity are an example to others. Few sports superstars touch or exceed the excellence that #4 achieved. He is the criterion, all others are measured against him.

Celebrating the 6th Day at the birdbath.

ON THE 6TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS,
HOCKEY GAVE TO US…
SIX STRIPS CELEBRATING SNOOPY

It was a dark and stormy night… when Charles M. Shulz made us believe that a beagle could laced ‘em up with the greats, down at the local birdbath. Peanuts did more to promote hockey than anyone else. It’s hard to quantify or measure the impact Schulz had on recreational hockey for children, and especially adults.

Thank you "Radar."

ON THE 7TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS,
HOCKEY GAVE TO US…

I played religious hockey; it was better to give than receive. - Gordie Howe

People would say, 'Girls don't play hockey. Girls don't skate.' I would say, 'Watch this.' - Hayley Wickenheiser

Win today and we walk together forever. - Philadelphia Flyers Coach Fred Shero

You were born to be a hockey player. You were meant to be here. This moment is yours. - Herb Brooks
