In this extreme heat and humidity of August, everything stalls. plants prioritize their energy into survival mode rather growth. Typically, this means that they stop throwing out new flower buds—yes even though they are getting water. The drought tolerant and heat-loving plants will be perform a touch better than the others, but less than 10 folds.
What thrives in stagnant, humidity atmosphere is the microscopic organisms like fungus (powdery mildew), bacteria, and viruses.
Sounds lovely right? Yes, it is because everything that happens interlinks— this is farming, this is the core of biology in front of our eyes. It’s is the beauty of life cycling through the seasons.
and how lovely that monarch caterpillars feasting on asclepias plants while pairs of mature monarchs dance with each other after feasting on zinnias blooms and swallowtails are doing the same. Hummingbirds flutter like helicopters on a mission. And the word got out to the Deer about this flower farm is a buffet and picked out the best of our Lisianthus, amaranths, delphs, and now the baby zinnias. Just like many who don’t eat their greens eg the perfect winterbor and Russian red kales, zukes, tomatoes, and bell peppers.
Lesson here is: Everyone and everything wants flowers. 🫠
