Lazy lunches by the sea, castle climbs, beach walks, fancy cars, double espressos, pistachio gelato, cherry filled pastries, caviar and champagne and boutique shopping filled our final days in Puglia.
At night we attended a tomato festival at our hotel and had a private dinner in a lemon grove.
Our favorite stop: polignano a mare … a town made famous in part thanks to Domenico Modugno … who sang that song Volare … a whole lot better than I did in the town square after a bottle of Vermentino.
A little wine and I’m up for anything.
Including wearing a crazy bedazzled Italian flag hat in 110 degree heat and conducting my own private show.
What can I say …I am a slave to fashion!
When in town, you must visit Meraviglioso. Order the black caviar … it’s less than $40 and comes with the yummiest popover … try the octopus and the fresh catch ceviche. Trust me … delish!
The beach is a sight to see … I took a picture for you. Because you can’t go there … there’s no more room to sit!
Instead of swimming, we opted to shop.
Nick and I bought linen outfits to match our hotel … which I can only say is out of this world and very much like one in Return of the Jedi. I believe it’s instagram famous.
It’s called Borgo Egnazia. Justin Timberlake got married here. There are many many flowy linen drapes, candles everywhere, satchels of lemons and nuts and a pool that rivals the ocean.
The tomato festival takes place here. It is more of a Hollywood theatrical production than a festival. At one point, a large black stallion danced the tango with a beautiful woman dressed in white with a red sash, performers blew flames from their mouths into the crowds while little old ladies ground tomatoes and rolled pasta and men served red wine and pizza.
I am not kidding.
I thought maybe I was dreaming. But I swear it happened! I have the pictures to prove it!
Our other favorite towns to visit Martina Franca and Locorotondo
Did you like it slippers? I saw that too so what do you eat? You get to work welcome… here we had lunch with the locals.
I highly recommend Osteria iL Risone … order the charcuterie board and the homemade orecchiette. You’ll be fat but you’ll also be happy …
This town is also famous for its Bocconotto. We ordered the cherry almond and ate it while sipping coffee and watching a wedding across the square.
Our grand hurrah was back at the hotel … where Nick surprised me with a private dinner in a lemon grove.
He’s no Justin Timberlake.
He’s my Nick. And, I love him.
Thank you Nick for spoiling me and proving it’s possible to fall in love all over again 22 years later.
Oh and one last postscript … this trip would not have been possible without Pasquale.
Our driver and our friend.
We met Pasquale halfway through our trip when he provided us with a transfer into town.
Most days he drives for those attending the G 7 or Francis Ford Coppola and his relatives … and other royalty. But for two days he was with us.
I will never ride in a nicer car with an even nicer driver than Pasquale. I love you my friend … ♥️thank you for all the rides, the chats with Mercedes and even more for the memories.
