We had the absolute honor of being part of the opening celebration for the Food & Wine Classic thanks to Chef Amethyst Ganaway, , a true champion of Gullah Geechee culture.
Alongside an incredible lineup of chefs, we served our Sea Island Dolma made with a Collard Leaf filled with Local Seasonal Vegetables, Local Oyster Mushrooms, and Carolina Gold Rice, set over a silky Sea Island Red Pea Gravy.
For us, the evening was more than an event. It was a tribute. The Gullah Geechee people, descendants of West and Central Africans who were brought to the Lowcountry and Sea Islands, have preserved one of the most intact African based foodways in the United States. Their traditions, resilience, language, and agricultural expertise shaped the foundation of Charleston’s culinary identity. Dishes made with ingredients like Carolina Gold Rice, Sea Island Red Peas, and Collards are not just delicious. They are history, memory, and legacy on a plate.
It was a beautiful night spent honoring our ancestors, the ones who built the food culture we celebrate today.
Major thanks to Chef Amethyst for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful moment.
