First USAF NC officer to obtain the rank of Brigadier General.
BRIGADIER GENERAL E. ANN HOEFLY
�During World War II, in July 1944, General Hoefly entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was assigned to England General Hospital, Atlantic City, N.J. She served in the European Theater of Operations, from December 1944 to January 1946, with the 235th General Hospital as general duty nurse and later as neuropsychiatric nurse.��She returned to the United States in February 1946 and was assigned as a general nurse to the Halloran General Hospital, Staten Island, N.Y., and while there attended a course in anesthesia. From September 1948 to March 1950 she was at Valley Forge General Hospital, Pa., as a neuropsychiatric nurse. In July 1949 General Hoefly transferred to the newly established U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps.��In August 1950 she completed a postgraduate course in neuropsychiatric nursing at the Medical Field Service School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and was assigned as a psychiatric nurse to the 306th Medical Group at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. During this tour of duty she completed the Flight Nurse Course at the USAF School of Aviation Medicine in 1952 and obtained her bachelor of science degree in 1953.��From June 1953 to August 1954 General Hoefly was an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry of the Medical Field Service School. She next attended Columbia University under the Air Force Institute of Technology program where she received her master's degree. In February 1956 she was assigned as a flight nurse with the 1734th Air Transportation Squadron, Brooks Air Force Base, Texas. In November 1956 she became a flight nursing instructor and later was chief of the Psychiatric Nurse Section at the 3883d School Group at Gunter Air Force Base, Ala. During this assignment, she attended a course in Medical Management of Mass Casualties.��General Hoefly was assigned to the Office of the Surgeon General, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, as deputy chief of the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps. She next served as chief nurse of the Fifth Air Force and chief of the Nursing Division at USAF Hospital, Tachikawa Air Base, Japan.��In July 1967 General Hoefly was assigned as chief nurse of the Air Force Systems Command at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.
During 1967 she attended the Air War College.��General Hoefly returned to the Office of the Surgeon General to assume duties as chief of the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps in August 1968. She attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1971.��Her military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with oak leaf cluster. She was rated as a flight nurse.
��She was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective July 1, 1972.
In her spare time she enjoyed sculpting, fishing and carpentry. She died on August 3, 2003. She is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
