Once it's officially sweater season at Grand View Lodge, what's your favorite spot on property?

We've got guesses of our own, a fire pit chair with a full view of Gull Lake, a table by the window at Grand Breakfast, or the deck at NorthPark after a workout when the air's crisp. We're more curious what you'd pick, especially if it's somewhere we wouldn't expect.

Before you tee off at The Pines, most regulars make a stop at the practice facility first. We have multiple putting greens, a two-sided driving range, and a full short game practice area.

The pro shop next door has earned its own reputation too. It's been recognized as one of the top shops in the state, which tends to matter once you're standing in it looking for the one club or glove you forgot to pack.

Northwoods' Pub doesn't close for the season, and once the summer crowd thin out, it starts to feel like it belongs more to the Brainerd Lakes Area. Same menu and music most nights, but just more room at the bar and a better chance the person next to you is a neighbor instead of a stranger.

If you've never made Northwoods' Pub a regular stop, October's a good month to start. It's an easy one to fold into a weeknight, not just a special occasion.

The boathouse at Grand View Lodge keeps kayaks and paddleboards ready right up until the docks come in for the year, and October is the last window for it. The water's colder than it was a month ago, but on a still, sunny afternoon it's some of the calmest paddling you'll find all season. No boat traffic and no crowds, just you and whichever direction you point the bow.

Life vests are provided and no experience is required, so it's an easy one to fit in even if it's just for twenty minutes between other plans.

There's a moment at the Main Property at Grand View Lodge when you come down the grand staircase and Gull Lake opens up in front of you all at once. It's a detail that can be easy to walk past on your first visit and impossible to walk past on every one after that.

October adds color along the far shoreline and catches the late-afternoon light to make the whole descent worth slowing down for, even if you've made that walk a hundred times before.

The Pines at Grand View Lodge is a 27-hole golf course split into three distinct nines. Lakes, Woods, and Marsh, each one a little different. Water in play here, trees closing in there, and wide-open marsh views somewhere else entirely.

October might be the best month to notice the difference between the three. The color's different depending on which nine you're walking, the crowds have thinned from summer, and Freddy's Sports Grill overlooks the course if you want to talk through your round afterward instead of heading straight to the car.

A tip for those coming in October, layers are the best strategy for a fall trip to northern Minnesota. Mornings can dip cold enough for a thicker jacket, and by early afternoon you'll likely want to shed it down to a sweater on the golf course or the trails.

Bring something warm enough for an evening fire pit, something breathable for an afternoon walk, and don't rule out a swimsuit for the indoor pool and water slide at Northpark Waterfront Pool. Pack for a day that changes its mind a few times, and you'll be set for whatever October decides to do.

Peak fall color has arrived at Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake and every October the drive in from the highway stops people mid-sentence. The maples go first, then the oaks catch up, and by the time you're pulling up to the water it feels like the whole property in Nisswa switched palettes overnight.

We don't get to control when it peaks, but we know it when we see it. If you've been planning a fall trip to northern Minnesota and haven't locked in your dates, this is the stretch to build around. Cooler air, that particular slant of afternoon light, and color you don't get most of the year anywhere near a lake this size.
