Thanksgiving has always been a big deal in our house.
Not necessarily because of the holiday itself, but because of what it represents to me. For one day, life slows down. Everybody comes together, no frivolous gifts in sight! The busyness of the world gets left at the door, and for a few hours, we just get to be with our people, with no expectations other than damn good potatoes, a juicy bird and hopefully more than one pie!
Since opening The. Supper Club, I’ve had the absolute privilege of being the one to make Thanksgiving for dozens of families every year. Several who have come back year after year, telling me that I’ve become a permanent part of their family traditions. I don’t know if I can adequately explain what that means to me. To know that something made in my kitchen has found its way into the memories and traditions of families I’ll never even sit at the table with? Oh, it makes my heart absolutely fly.
Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite opportunities to love my people the very best way I know how. Through food. Through a table full of people. Through all the little details that make someone feel cared for. And I take a tremendous amount of pride in that. Honestly I struggle to say who I am outside of the kitchen, the need to serve and thrill I get when the room is silent because everyone is busy eating is so deeply ingrained in me, it IS my identity! I’m a Martha! I’m a mom.
Which is why I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the families who lost their homes in this year’s wildfires.
I can’t imagine being forced from your home, losing so many of the things you’ve spent a lifetime collecting, and then heading into the holidays still carrying the weight of being the person who’s supposed to make all the magic happen.
The familiar kitchen is gone. The roasting pans, the knives, Great grandma’s coveted holiday serving platter that never once went in the dishwasher! All the little things you never thought twice about needing because they’d always just been there. A tool box you crafted over years of service.
And somehow, you’re still supposed to pull off this year? With a smile?!
I know that pressure. I think a lot of us do.
And I would really, really love to take some of it away.
So here’s what I'm going to do.
I'm on a mission!
Our Thanksgiving pre orders are live and ready for you! I JUST extended the number of meals we're going to make!
I have a goal!
If we sell 20 Thanksgiving meals....the full feast....I will donate 5 additional Feasts, to go to families displaced by this years fires.
And when I say Thanksgiving dinner, I mean the whole dang thing. The turkey, the potatoes, the sides, all of it. A proper feast, without the grocery shopping, the mountain of dishes, or the pressure to somehow make everything perfect.
I know a meal can’t replace a home. It can’t bring back Great Grandma’s serving platter or all the traditions that went along with it.
But maybe, it can give someone who has spent their whole life taking care of the magic a chance to be taken care of. Give a family an opportunity to have an easy afternoon, beginning new traditions.
Maybe this year, they can just show up at the table. Sit with their people. Laugh a little. Eat too much. Have another piece of pie.
And not have to be the one responsible for making it all happen.
Because sometimes the best way to love someone is to take something off their plate.
And sometimes it’s to put something on it.
Hearts wide open. Tables full.
📷 this little piece of scratch paper has been hanging in my spice cupboard for as long as I can remember... its my Thanksgiving checklist, the way I keep my brain together and how I make sure I make it through the holiday without forgetting any of the important pieces from shopping to service. The best way to a stress free holiday is with a well made, time tested plan.
