Theresa Claiborne piloted her final flight as a United Airlines pilot from Lisbon, Portugal to Newark Liberty International Airport on May 23, 2024. Not only was she the first Black female pilot for United, but she was also the first Black female pilot in the USAF. She retired after 43 years of flying and over 20,000 flight hours.

In 2016, she co-founded the organization Sister of the Skies with pilots Christine Angel Hughes and Nia Wordlaw. Sisters of the Skies' mission is to support and build a more diverse next generation of aviation professionals by offering workshops, mentorships, and scholarships.

Representation always matters.

Local Newport News Balloon Artist Selected to Showcase Skills at the Big Balloon Build Hundreds applied, only 80 selected, to create an immersive balloon land out of 150,000+ balloons in Northern Indiana to support charity.

Elkhart, IN (January 29, 2024) – Ella House, a talented balloon artist in the Newport News area, has been selected to join a team of the world’s best balloon artists to create an amazing balloon wonderland in Northern Indiana. All proceeds from the event will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Michiana.

The Big Balloon Build is an international balloon event created out of 150,000+ biodegradable balloons. This April, Ella will work with other balloon artists to transform the Northern Indiana Event Center into a larger-than-life, fully immersive balloon carnival.
“We will have tightrope walkers, a giant ferris wheel, clowns, and more - all made entirely out of balloons! And our artists will create this entire exhibit in just four days, working April 22th-25th, before it opens to the public,” said Stuart Davies, director of the Big Balloon Build. “We are thrilled to have Ella House as part of the team, helping us create this massive event and raising important funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Michiana.”
Ella House is donating her time and talents as a Certified Balloon
Artist (CBA), bringing joy and aid to children. Ella started All About Events in 2019, as an extension of her wedding coordinating business, Today We Are One. All About Events provides the elegant party rental services, balloon decor and yard cards to the business. So, whether you’re getting married, hosting a small intimate gathering for two, a large corporate event or a big party bash, All About Events is there to make your celebration .... all about YOU! Ella House was selected from hundreds of applicants to participate in the Big Balloon Build in Northern Indiana. This is Ella’s first time participating in the Big Balloon Build, and we are honored to have her.
