We would like to welcome Ryan Johnson who will direct the Jazz Big Band, teach improvisation lessons, and Jazz Theory and Arranging.
Ryan Johnson is a multiple woodwind artist based in Columbia, SC. Ryan holds a degree in Music Education from Georgia College and State University, two degrees in saxophone performance from Columbus State University (M.M. and A.D.), and is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in Saxophone performance from the University of South Carolina. At USC, Ryan assists in teaching the Undergraduate Music Theory curriculum and teaches the Undergraduate Aural Skills curriculum. Ryan is the former instructor of Woodwinds and Director of Wind Studies at LaGrange College and the former instructor of woodwinds at Middle Georgia State University. In these roles, Ryan taught Applied Flute, Saxophone, and Clarinet Lessons, Improvisation, Music Appreciation, and was responsible for LaGrange College's Wind Instrumental program. Professionally, Ryan has presented at multiple National and International Conferences, including the North American Saxophone Biennial Conference, the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, and the College Band Director National Association Conference. Ryan regularly performs with his trumpet and saxophone duo, the Oconee Duo, as well as performing a regular stream of gigs on multiple woodwinds in the Southeast and maintaining his private studio.
