I just want to say something about our schools loss this past weekend.
Dan Drew was my teacher, my mentor, and my friend when I was an undergrad at NJIT. Outside of the classroom and dorm room I would spend my time in the theater at Kupfrain Hall (Then University Hall) and Bradley Hall building sets or running shows for the theater. The theatre helped give me a genuine college experience that was beyond just the work.
Dan was a huge part of that. As soon as I set foot in that theater he and the rest of the theater crew took me under their wing. They were my family away from home. They were there when I needed a friend, they were there when I needed reality checked. The people who helped me through hard times and helped to make the good times that much better. We did some amazing things in that little theater on a shoe string budget.
Throughout all of it I learned some life lessons that I hold to this day. That if you want to play hard, you gotta work hard. That if you believe in each other they will believe in themselves. That you thank those who helped you by paying it forward. And that you expect the students to give back a million dollars AFTER they have made their millions.
I owe my talents as a teacher, as a leader, and as a mentor to the lessons and legacy started by Dan Drew. Weather you knew it or not, you are all part of that legacy. If you ever thought I was a good teacher, know that I am because of him and that I am but a shadow of that man. He started a tradition after each show we would say goodbye to the project with a toast, "Here's to us! And who's like us? Damn FEW! And they're dead!"
