On May 18, 1803, during the Haitian Revolution, Jean-Jacques Dessalines removed the white stripe from the French flag—creating a new banner that would become a symbol of liberation, unity, and resistance for the first independent Black republic.

Sewn by Catherine Flon, the blue and red flag represented the alliance of Black and mixed-race Haitians fighting together under one message: L’Union Fait La Force — Unity Makes Strength.

Haitian Flag Day is more than a national celebration. It is a reminder of Ayiti’s revolutionary impact on the world, the resilience of its people, and the enduring cultural spirit that continues to move across generations and throughout the diaspora.

While Short Stay Haitian Gouyad will not take place directly on Flag Day, this month we intentionally recognize the significance of Haitian history, music, food, dance, and community through celebration. We believe culture deserves space to be felt, shared, and honored beyond a single date on the calendar.

A rhythm that stays close.

Konpa was born in 1955 when Nemours Jean-Baptiste introduced Kompa Direk—a sound rooted in traditional Haitian méringue, layered with jazz and African rhythms. It wasn’t just music, it was movement. A slower, intentional couple’s dance—often called méringue de salon—built on connection, subtle control, and the language of the hips.

By the late 50s and 60s, Konpa became more than a dance floor staple—it was a cultural pulse. A unifying expression of modern Haitian identity that carried through generations. As it spread across the Caribbean, it shaped new sounds and scenes, even influencing the rise of Zouk, while evolving sonically with new instruments and textures in the decades that followed.

And now—Gouyad.
A slower, deeper, more intimate evolution. A style that leans all the way into the rhythm, where every movement is felt, not rushed.

This is the energy we’re bringing into the room.

Golden, crisp, and folded with intention.

Pâté kòde—literally “twisted patties”—gets its name from the hand-crimped edge that seals each piece before it hits the oil. But beyond the technique, it tells a deeper story. Rooted in a blend of French colonial influence and West African cooking traditions, this humble pastry evolved into a staple of Haitian life by the early 20th century.

Wrapped in paper, passed hand to hand, it’s the kind of food that lives in memory—after school snacks, quick meals between work, street corners filled with flavor. Whether filled with smoked herring, beef, or chicken, it’s always been about accessibility, community, and satisfaction.

And like many Haitian traditions, it traveled—finding new homes across the diaspora from Brooklyn to Miami, still holding the same warmth.

This Haitian Flag Day, we’re bringing that feeling to Short Stay.
