🩰The big news is out! We're thrilled to announce the upcoming release of our new coffee table book, The Color of Dance. This beautiful book features stunning images and inspiring quotes from ballerinas we've met on our journey. The project is the culmination of our founder TaKiyah Wallace's 10-year journey shooting the Brown Girls Do Ballet photo project.

The Color of Dance redefines what ballet has looked like for centuries and will inspire dancers—and all of us—to pursue our dreams no matter what barriers are put in front of us. Head to the link below for presale or grab your copy this September wherever books are sold. Don't miss out on this incredible celebration of diversity and talent in the world of dance!

🌟About the project:

Newark Dances seeks to create a multidisciplinary/collaborative performance art project based on a local mural titled “The Reflective Black Body” by Layqua Nuna Yawa. The mural will be used as a starting point for inspiration. This project will reflect the choreographic vision of two New Jersey based dancers/choreographers, and the directorial vision of videographer Ryan Arnez Monroe, and the musical talent of violinist Najee Williams, combined with the overall production leadership from visual artist, former contemporary dancer and Newark Dances director, Monifa Kincaid.

The idea is to create a choreographed dance work that is inspired by the mural “The Reflective Black Body” by Layqua Nuna Yawar as a thematic starting point; concurrently, videographer Ryan Arnez Monroe will create a short film focused on the intimate perspective between the dancers, the flow of movement and music, all the while weaving in a visual narrative of the overall theme of a reflective black body. The music by violinist Najee Williams will be created as a reaction to this dynamic flow of movement as it develops during the choreographic process.

Have you ever watched a professional dancer and just felt yourself taken away by their flow and ability to move within space with such grace and ease? As you watch them, you find yourself swaying through their highs, lows and dynamic responses to the rhythm and tempo. What if you could find a way to capture the raw essence of flow/movement energy on paper with just as much freedom and ease? What would it look like; how would you even capture this?🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Join facilitator and visual artist Monifa Kincaid and dancer Zoey Crenshaw for a dance/movement energetic sketch and collaborative collage workshop. Dancer Zoey will feed us with a free flowing and improvisatory dance experience. We will then capture her movements as well as the vibrations of the music via energetic line drawings. and the inspiration of the dance/music group experience to collaboratively create a large scale collage.

Since 2018, Kofago Dance Ensemble has created innovative works that draw from West African dance traditions and West Indian influences. The ensemble prepares their performances with a deep traditional foundation. Their repertory includes traditional dances from West Africa, Caribbean dance forms as well as modern pieces based on West African and Caribbean principles of movement and space.
