☀️ The Summer Environment: What Changes?
Summer brings longer daylight, higher temperatures, and sometimes drier indoor air due to air conditioning. These changes impact how much water, light, and ventilation your orchids need.
Come visit us at our Harlem location to see our white Phalaenopsis orchids in person — they're customer favorites!
💧 Hydration: Finding the Right Rhythm
Increased sunlight and warmth cause orchids to dry out more quickly. Watering once a week may not be enough during hot spells. Instead:
•Water when the top inch of bark feels dry.
•Use lukewarm water.
•Ensure drainage to avoid root rot.
•Mist aerial roots if your home is dry.
•We always remind our customers in Harlem: it’s better to under-water than over-water your orchid. Let the roots guide you!
🌬️ Air Circulation & Humidity
Good airflow keeps leaves dry and helps prevent disease. Humidity trays or room humidifiers are excellent for boosting moisture levels, especially in air-conditioned spaces. Place a fan nearby (but not directly blowing on the plant) to keep air moving gently. At Barbara’s Flowers, we also carry mini humidifiers and decorative trays to help your orchid stay comfy and beautiful.
☀️ Light: Bright, But Not Harsh
Too much direct summer sun can scorch your orchid’s leaves. Place them near a window with filtered light — like behind a sheer curtain — or in a well-lit room that doesn’t get harsh midday sun. Our Harlem showroom is filled with bright, indirect light — perfect for showcasing orchids and giving you inspiration on placement.
🌿 Fertilizer: Support That Summer Growth
Summer is a period of active growth for most orchids, especially Phalaenopsis. Feeding your orchid helps maintain healthy foliage and encourages future blooms. We recommend organic fertilizers that are gentle yet effective. Look for blends that include:
•Nitrogen (N) for leaf growth
•Phosphorus (P) for strong roots and flower production
•Potassium (K) for overall plant health
•Try using a diluted organic mix such as fish emulsion or seaweed extract every 2-3 weeks. Always water lightly before fertilizing to avoid root burn. Stop by Barbara’s Flowers in Harlem for our favorite natural fertilizers and expert guidance from our team.
🩼 Quick Summer Tips
Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust. Prune old flower spikes after blooming ends. Repot only if roots are outgrowing the pot — avoid disturbing blooming plants. We’re always happy to assist with repotting services or advice in-store!
🌸 FINAL BLOOM
Orchids are wonderfully adaptive and rewarding with the right care. Summer is their time to shine — and with just a few thoughtful steps, your orchids can stay lush, colorful, and healthy.
