The 1st American Mardi Gras took place on March 3, 1699, when French explorers dropped anchor near present-day New Orleans. They threw a tiny party and dubbed their landing spot “Point du Mardi Gras.” The 1st US Mardi Gras parade was in in 1837 and still takes place to this day.
