When Sergio Assad wrote The Walls during the pandemic, he never imagined it would one day bring dozens of guitarists together.

“I wrote The Walls during a time when we were all feeling isolated from one another. That’s why I love hearing it played by a guitar orchestra. The music is about coming together.”

This summer, participants at the 26th New York Guitar Seminar will have the unique opportunity to perform selections from The Walls forming the NYGS Guitar Orchestra under the direction of Sergio Assad himself and soloist Penelope Shvarts taking the cello part initially played by Yo-Yo Ma.

Master classes with Sergio Assad, Berta Rojas, João Luiz, Laura Oltman, Yenne Lee, Michael Newman, Sara Overholt, Gabriel Handy, Tali Roth, José Maldonado, Michael Andriaccio, and Mariano Aguirre.

Here’s featured soloist, Penelope Shvarts, playing an excerpt from The Walls by Sergio Assad, one of the featured works for this summer’s New York Guitar Seminar guit-orchestra.

Maestro Sergio Assad will be with us throughout the week at NYGS, leading rehearsals and conducting the final performance. Participants will perform selections from The Great Wall of China, Hadrian’s Wall, and Middle Eastern Walls as part of the seminar’s closing concert on July 2.
