FREEDOM ’N RHYTHM

Kalahari Gallery welcomes activist artist Ben Ibebe’s for a two week engagement. His diverse work has been the highlight of our permanent collection for the last four years. We are thrilled to have him here from his home in the Niger Delta, West Africa to showcase fifty of his most prolific recent works from his FREEDOM ’N RHYTHM collection from October 15th to Nov 4th 2015.

This is an captivating body of work that conveys the artists’ sensibilities. His celebration of optimism and then his deep despair emerges visually as he witnesses the life quality pendulum sway from joyful to tragic for Africans throughout the diaspora. Using scenes from African life he captures the lightness and joy of life contrasted with misery and pervasive discontent that is ever present. Through the discourse that is his work you can feel the rhythm of a life fraught with struggle, with oppression, and taste the thirst for freedom. The universality of emotion in his work speaks to us regardless of which of the seven continents from which we hail.

Ibebe uses the palette knife to apply his vibrant colors to canvas. Like no other artist he enlivens the canvas without the use of a brush. An amazing technique perfected over years.FREEDOM N’ RHYTHM takes you on a journey through Africa… not a vacation but an experience. It will introduce an early and rare piece on loan from the Weusi collection showing Ibebe’s amazing acumen with the brush.

Kalahari Gallery is a Bedford-Stuyvesant based art gallery situated in Central Brooklyn, NY. Our exhibitions include work by artists we admire, both emerging and established. We show a mixture of paintings, textiles, sculpture, and photography.

Our affiliation with LLIRN a community organization that works with individuals who self-identify as having a disability has added a spellbinding dimension when we showcase the works from talented artists with disabilities who view the world with extraordinary sensibilities.

The gallery occupies two principal spaces; the first a 750 sq. ft. contemporary exhibition space with a wall that opens up to a outdoor exhibit space surrounded by trees and foliage. The next space is where art meets jazz. In a beautifully appointed 1000 sq. ft. room opening to a deck that leads to a garden performance space.

Most exhibitions are by invitation only, with two or three private views per show. At other times the gallery and garden can be visited by appointment. Special hours for FREEDOM ’N RHYTHM are Mondays 7-11pm; Tuesdays 12-9pm; Wednesdays 12-midnight; Thursdays 12-9 pm; Fridays12-9pm, Saturdays 12-9pm and Sundays 2-9pm.

Join Us Friday October 15th 2015 for the opening reception of FREEDOM ’N RHYTHM from 6-9pm and again on Sunday October 18th for an artist talk from 4-7pm.

Vumelani Sibeko, from SOWETO, S. Africa, is currently living and working in New York City. As an artist, he is an activist whose art and performance has brought attention to the issues of HIV/AIDS and women's abuse, as well as the recent xenophobic assaults on foreigners in his home country.

Friday's performance will begin at 40 West 120th st, then proceed on foot to the Subway at 125th St. and St. Nicholas Ave, where Vumelani will board the A train to High St., in Brooklyn. From High St. he will walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and end his walk at the site of the African Burial Ground Memorial just north of City Hall. (See maps and schedule, below).

In his public performances Vumelani endures a harsh journey by foot through the streets of the city that confronts the audience and commands their attention. His difficult journey, shackled and carrying a 55 pound ball and chain, are a testimony to the history of slavery in Africa and in America, and a reminder of the many forms of modern day slavery. The performance takes place against the unique backdrop of "Black Friday", America's day of homage (and enslavement) to consumerism. As in his paintings, the journey is the destination.
