Friday Business Book Review (2 of 50) - WHERE DID I GO RIGHT (You’re no one in Hollywood unless someone wants you dead) by Bernie Brillstein “A painting called NEBRASKA by John Register hangs in my office. There are green and brown fields for as far as the eye can see. Overhead, grey clouds butt against a clear blue sky but it’s not certain which is disappearing and which is moving in. A two lane black-top from nowhere arrives quietly in the foreground with a weathered stop sign at a deserted intersection. The painting has always asked, ‘What do you see, the stop sign or the open road?'" The answer for me was always easy - the open road.”
Bernie was one of the most successful Hollywood managers and TV/film producers of the 80s & 90s. He played a central role in the creation of SNL and produced movies including Ghostbusters, The Blues Brothers, and the Scary Movie franchise. This is his life story. When he was starting out as a manager, he couldn’t sign any celebrities. No one wanted to go with an unknown manager. So he created a new category of clients and started managing TV writers, producers, and other below-the-line key creative professionals. This was 1969 and no one ever considered that before. When the establishment wouldn't accept him, he created an entirely new category. It put him in the room with studio executives and paved the way for his massive success.
I don’t consider this a business book however I found a few lessons worth sharing from his life.
#1 - Spend as much time as possible with your clients on the phone, at lunch, on the golf course or anywhere else. He wouldn’t have succeeded to his level had he not loved being with people.
#2 - Your competition will try to poach your clients. Sometimes they will be successful so don’t put all of your eggs in one basket
#3 - Diversify the types of clients you have.
#4 - Do something you love but accept that you will hate your work some days. The good days will out number the bad if you treat people with honesty and kindness. Keep pushing forward.
I would recommend this book if you are a lover of Hollywood history but not for any wisdom beyond that. Support your local library the next time they have a book sale too!
