‘Our Roots’ is a photo series that explores the complexities of the Asian American identity, and acknowledges the beauty of growing up within this vast and varied intersection.
Collectively, the series illustrates what lies between the dichotomy of Asian and American: a spectrum of identities that was founded on Asian traditions and values, yet was molded and shaped by the larger American influence.
The subject of each image is a familiar and beloved food item from our childhoods that is rooted in Asian food culture or history paired with an elaborate floral arrangement. The styling of the photos pull from a variety of influences in art and design culture that suggests a direct parallel to the blending of cultures required by American life.
Our Roots commemorates the Asian-American journey to self-discovery and the enrichment of our identities. It embraces the many facets of Asian-American life and the paradoxical yet beautiful nature of our dual identities.
