City officials expressed cautious optimism this week after discussions began surrounding a proposed underground transportation tunnel project involving Elon Musk’s Boring Company, despite widespread acknowledgment that much of New Orleans already struggles with the basic concept of ground.

The proposal, which would reportedly connect key areas downtown through a high speed underground tunnel system, was described by local leaders as “forward thinking,” “innovative,” and “probably fine honestly.”

Officials insist the tunnel would feature advanced drainage technology designed to keep water out, a strategy many residents noted has not yet been fully mastered above ground.

“We believe this tunnel has the potential to be significantly less flooded than several existing streets,” said Assistant Director of Stormwater Planning Lionel Fabre. “In some cases, possibly by multiple feet.”

Engineers familiar with New Orleans infrastructure reportedly spent much of the week quietly staring into the distance before asking whether the project might instead be more achievable in literally any other city on Earth.
