When wealthy newcomers began building here in the 1830s, they set just one or two houses to a block, each behind lawns, magnolias, and iron fences. Downtown, the Creole French Quarter stood wall to wall, its courtyards kept hidden inside. Uptown, the houses wore their gardens on the outside.⁣
⁣
Nearly two centuries on, Solari Orleans still stands among those lawns and live oaks on Saint Charles Avenue, its lush courtyard glistening with the Old World charm the neighborhood was named for.⁣
