Typically, we share blissful occasions with gorgeous photos. Today, on Hurricane Katrina’s 20th Anniversary, I choose to use this platform as a place to commemorate what happened. I won’t share my story here, if you want to hear it, give me a call. What I will say is: take a moment to look at one of the documentaries that have come out over the years. Two were just released this month on Netflix and National Geographic. Watching those is enough to begin to understand what the people went through, what the city lost, and the true effort it took to become the place it is today.

My people are resilient and filled with spirit. That spirit is what carries New Orleans. I feel that I have a responsibility to share this. Throughout the planning year, we create countless opportunities for joy, but like Betty said, “no pain, no gain.” Take a moment to honor the pain the city had to get through for anyone celebrating here to experience “the gain.” I don’t want to make you sad, I just want to make you stop, honor, and understand.
