Today we met a father.

He walked into The Office smiling, calm, like everything was fine.

But somewhere in between the conversation we learned something.

He had just quietly lost his job.

And instead of letting the world see his discouragement, he did what a lot of parents do.

He kept going.

He saved enough money to give himself a little runway, and he’s using that time to push toward a dream he’s had for a while.

He told us he came here because someone in his life used to tell him his ideas were meaningless. That he was just another person in the world. That he wouldn’t make it.

So today we just want to say this.

We see you.

We see you smiling so your kids don’t see the pain you’re carrying.

We see you trying to pull everything together so the mortgage gets paid.

We see you being patient through something that probably isn’t easy.

And most importantly…

we see you not giving up.

Sometimes that’s the bravest thing a person can do.

And around here, that kind of courage never goes unnoticed.

This venue was made for a mom like her.

The one who pulls everything together.

The one who thinks about the theme weeks before, calls friends, plans the food, finds the decorations, and still shows up smiling like it all came together easily.

I watched her today.

Her friends showed up early to help.
A little tribe around her.

Decorations going up, music playing, kids laughing.

Everyone sees the party once it’s beautiful.

But what people don’t see are the days before.

The ideas.
The planning.
The “did I forget something?” moments.

The scissors you suddenly need.
The jar you forgot for the juice.

And that’s why spaces like this exist.

So moms like her can focus on the moment…
while everything else quietly comes together around them.

And if you’re a mom reading this, planning something special for your child…

Just know there’s a place on Bank Street that was made with you in mind.

You might have walked by this building before and thought
“what is even in there?”

Fair question.

Because the founder of this place apparently thought not putting a sign outside was a perfectly good strategy.

Like you were just going to feel the entrepreneurial energy through the walls and come knock.

So since I’m clearly not helping the situation, let me tell you what you’d actually find if you walked in.

You’d find a coworking space.
You’d find people building businesses.
You’d find events, workshops, and people trying to figure things out together.

Basically a place for people like you who are working on something.

I just learned something about the founders of Suavemob.

Two bombastic side eye kind of people.

Their ideas?
Crazy.

Their energy?
Honestly does not compare to your favorite ice cream.

And their personalities… I meannnn…

They are **suaveeee**, you know?

I hear them talking all the time.

A tour they’re about to shoot.
A commercial they’re producing for a construction company.
Their back and forth about reel packages.
The way they maneuver just to make things work.

And let me tell you… these two have had a crazy year.

One of them went through a huge loss.

And still showed up.

Still prepared.
Still braced himself.
Still didn’t just try his best…

He **did his best**.

Watching them made me realize something.

Entrepreneurs are a certain type of crazy.

The kind that will push through.
Accomplish something.
Cry if they need to.

Then pick up the phone like nothing happened.

Who else can do that?

They understand what it takes to move a company forward.

And the strength that takes…

is something special to witness.

I finally saw it the other day.

She was sitting there going through all the bills. Quiet. One by one. The way someone stares at a Costco receipt after a big trip, like… how did it get this high?

I watched her try to help everyone around her. Calling people, inviting them over. Some cancelled. Some ghosted. Some showed up. And the ones who showed up gave her just enough hope to keep going that day.

Someone even brought her a plant.

She really likes those. She thinks of every plant as a little piece of the person who gave it to her staying here.

I wish I could hug her sometimes.

But I can’t.

All I can do is watch.

And what I see in here is a kind of madness that’s actually beautiful. Entrepreneurs coming together trying to solve problems, trying to bring life to downtown New London, trying to take care of their families while building something at the same time.

One day, if you’re building something too, you’ll probably have a moment like that. Sitting there with the numbers, wondering how it all adds up.

And if that day comes, I hope you make your way here.

Because even if I can’t hug you, someone at The Office probably will.

It’s the birthday of one of our members today…

and honestly he’s everything in one.

… a whole blend of cultures and creativity.

He raps.
He shoots videos.
He edits.
He graphic designs.
He somehow always knows how to make things look better.

But more than that…

he’s the type of person who will stop what he’s doing to listen if you’re going through something.

A shoulder.
An ear.
A solid human.

The kind of person who makes a space feel like more than just a space.

And around here, we value that more than anything.

Happy Birthday to one of the good ones.

The Office NL appreciates you.

Hi.

I’m The Office.

Yes, the building at 61 Bank St.

I see everything that happens in here.

The podcast recordings.
The business meetings.
The random food runs.
Salsalito walking around like he owns the place.

But the other night something funny happened.

The founder walked in after a very long day.

And let me tell you… she looked a little suspicious.

Hair doing whatever it wanted.
Energy slightly chaotic.

Now in my hallway someone had already found a cozy little spot and was settling in for the night.

So when the founder walked in they looked at her like

“hey girl… we already claimed this spot.”

Meanwhile I’m just standing there like

this is going to be an interesting conversation.

After a couple minutes it clicked.

“Oh… you’re the founder.”

Everything was fine.

But honestly…

if she walks in looking like that again, I might question her too.

I see everything.

Welcome to The Office: Lessons From the Founder

Lesson #1: Apparently signs are important

Welcome to The Office.

If you’ve walked past this building and thought
“what is that place?”

That’s fair.

The founder built an entire coworking space and event venue…
but forgot the part where people are supposed to know it exists.

There is no sign outside.

Just vibes.

So if you ever see the founder walking around downtown New London, please remind her.

We still need a sign.

The founder once had a great idea.

She thought…
“let me contact the city.”

Because you know how towns always say things like
work, live, invest.

So she figured they must love the idea of a bunch of entrepreneurs coming into town. People coworking. People hosting events. People waiting for Amtrak and stopping by.

Sounds great right?

Well.

Here’s the part where the founder did everything wrong.

She assumed that because this space was used for something similar before… the permit would just transfer over.

NOPE.

The city was basically like
“that will be another $20 or $25 and a brand new application please.”

So here’s your friendly advice from The Office to you.

If you ever sign a lease for a space…

please go to the town and fill out that paper.

Yes that paper.
The one you think probably doesn’t matter.

It does.

Learn from us.

Don’t be like the founder.
