Nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped 240 feet underground. Millions of gallons of water rushing in. Their escape routes cut off. What happened next was a miracle.

On July 24, 2002, nine miners at the Quecreek Mine in Somerset County accidentally broke into an abandoned, flooded mine. Water poured into the tunnels, trapping them deep underground in a small pocket of air. For more than 77 hours, rescuers worked around the clock, drilling through rock as families waited and an entire nation watched.

Below ground, the men huddled together in freezing darkness, unsure if they would ever see daylight again. Then, on July 28, rescuers finally reached them. One by one, all nine miners were lifted to safety through a narrow rescue shaft.

ALL NINE SURVIVED.

The Quecreek Mine Rescue became one of Pennsylvania's greatest survival stories, proving what determination, courage, and refusing to give up can accomplish.
