At work, we don’t call things failures, we call them “growth opportunities.” So here are my late season garden “opportunities for improvement.”

I heavily cut back on the food I grew this year and only grew tomatoes and cucumbers. The tomatoes are done now and from the 12+ plants I planted, I got a few handfuls of good Romas and that’s about it. My Delicious tomatoes were weird all season and didn’t start ripening normally until the last 3 weeks or so. I’ve been battling the normal hornworms all season but haven’t been checking on them recently since they decimated a few plants. Some of the tomato worms did fall victim to parasitic wasps though. Today I found the best plant got blown over by the storms we got a few nights ago. No more tomatoes for me, but I’ll try again next year, probably with different varieties.

The Passion Vine has taken over. I have suckers popping up everywhere and I’m tired of pulling them. Not tired enough to torch the whole plant, but I really wish it wasn’t so aggressive. I love the flowers and I know the bees and hummingbirds do too, but if it could stay where it is, that would be preferred of course 😅 For now I collect the fruit and toss it back into the raised bed but I think I need to move this. Maybe a corner in the back of my property, out of the main garden.

The w**ds and grass are spreading and going to seed. I’m torn between w**d management methods. I put down some landscape fabric in one area and that’s been very convenient, but it’s not a great long term solution for me. I’ll probably stick to mulch and try to apply it more consistently.

Lots of flopping plants because I refuse to stake them or use netting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I added a new cattle panel arch but I did everything backwards so it’s disassembling.

Not pictured: my attitude. The garden feels a bit overwhelming and like a chore. Less so than in past years though. Going to work on my systems and plan for next year to create more joy, with less stress - the way the garden should be.

I’m collecting seeds today to save for next year and as I look around, I’m feeling extra thankful for the garden and all the life it holds.

Every seed I save was pollinated by a tiny creature. Nature connects us all, and watching that connection come to life is one of my favorite parts of gardening. 💛

I might have been slightly over ambitious with winter sowing native plants this year, but here’s a 9 month update on what feels like a mini-plant nursery.

The majority of the seedlings in my plant pile were winter sown, but some I started early this summer. I guess I didn’t think I had enough plants?🙃😂

So far, I seem to be successful growing the plants, but I’m not great at sticking to a planting plan. I go out to plant and start putting things out randomly instead. I had a few designs drawn out when I started planting this winter, but the plants were all ready at different times so I put that idea on hold.

Now, I have a decent space that’s been covered with nursery plastic the last few months. When it cools down a bit, my new plan is to move the plant pile into that area for the winter. That should give me time to prep new spaces, and the plants can get a little bigger to re-plant in the spring. Not sure if that’s the best plan, but it’s where I’m at right now! If you have suggestions, let me know in the comments please!!



Blue mistflower is already blooming in the milk jugs. I intended to grow lots of these for bouquets but I’ll try again next year!

Tiny St John’s-wort. I’d love to have these in a hedgerow.

More St. John’s-wort and Liatris. These are the few that I got around to potting up in late spring. I also divided up the NJ Tea plants I grew, but they died right afterwards 😬

Anise Hyssop I got planted! The pollinators have been loving 🐝

Wild Quinine also got put in the ground. I love the unique blooms and texture they bring.

August was a beautiful month in the garden!

The gold finches have been really enjoying the coneflower seed heads I’ve left in the front flower bed. I had the privilege of watching one eat after work one evening. They’ve been going crazy for the sunflowers in the backyard too.

Everything is blooming! I’ve been waiting on the Cosmos awhile and suddenly the entire row has erupted with color. The double clicks have been especially fun to grow this year.

August was also the month for Monarchs in my garden. This year I winter sowed a lot of Common Milkw**d and planted a swath of about 15 plants in the spring. I’ve lost count of how many caterpillars I’ve seen on them so far, and small ones have still been appearing in September. I also put out swamp and butterfly milkw**d but in lesser quantities. The Monarchs seem to prefer the large grouping of the common for the moment. This year I’ve been so lucky to see the Monarch in so many stages. It was so cool to find one pupating on the tomato cage!!

The days are getting shorter, but I’m soaking in the last month of summer. I’m starting to collect seeds for this year’s winter sowing and next year’s garden. Plans for next summer are floating around my head, but for now I’m watering daily and enjoying the bright colors while they’re here!

Living in a zinnia paradise 😌

I’m so glad I decided to try some new varieties this year! Linen and anything Queen Lime have been my favorites, and I’ll probably pass on the Zinderellas in the future.

We’re having typical late-summer weather - lots of heat and little rain - so I’ve been out in the evenings watering and pulling w**ds and crabgrass… oh the crabgrass 🙃. In a weird way, I like w**ding. 15 minutes turns into 2 hours and before I know it, it’s dark and my husband is shining a flashlight out the back door looking for me. It’s nice to look up and see the pile I’ve created, and the nice pathway or garden bed I’ve revealed. A good reminder that the work is always worth doing!

Enjoyed the sunset with the dogs tonight! So thankful for this view and our little piece of dirt 💚

This area of the garden is one of my favorite views in the evening. I can’t get enough of the sun setting behind the sunflowers. Sometimes I get to see the finches flying around too.
We finally got a bit of rain yesterday and the birds and flowers seemed to enjoy it. I’m happy for the bit of a cool-down it brought!
