The first frost.
It’s such a welcome friend.
The first frost of 2025 was last week on the 8th.
Some people may think oh how sad the beauty that was so plentiful is now gone. It is no more. The plant is dead and will flower no longer.
But not me.
I told friends I’m looking forward to the first frost like an old dear friend.
Because the plants know they were never meant to keep prodcuing, to keep going, to keep creating beauty. To keep blooming.
They were meant to hunker down deep in the warm soil. To rest. To regenerate. To just be. And not do. That all good things must come to end and that can be and is good. That there is rest and recuperation after a season of blooming and doing and maximum creating.
In a culture that is constantly on the go, doing, maintaining, always busy, always active and on the go we can learn so much from plants.
To lean into the next season. To rejoice that we enjoyed such a beautiful bountiful summer. But also usher in with welcoming hands the next beautiful season of slowing down.
Of crisp cool mornings. Of rustling leaves. of air full of the earthy smell of leaves and decay that provides needed nourishment. Of cold cozy nights around the fire.
Look to the plants, to God’s beautiful creation and you may learn of resting our bodies and souls of slowing down not speeding up or through the next season. And truly ushering fall and soon to be winter. A season to rest and rejuvenate. We can welcome in a season of being slow and dormant. To stop creating but conserve so we, like plants, can be ready for regrowth and blooming come spring.
