Times are hard and weird and it seems like everyone is tossing things up in the air and trying to figure out what’s next for them. Since the pandemic started it seems like the whole world is questioning what they want to do with their lives and how they need to alter them to truly be happy. This has brought us lots of new people and it has meant that some other people move on to new things. Throughout this time Quinn and I have thought long and hard about how to make our company the kind of place people want to work, especially if you love flowers. We believe we have succeeded in making our studio the best place to work for a flower obsessed person in Nashville. Flowers are like a calling. If you feel pulled to flowers and you have experience we want you on our team.

It’s small business Saturday! We can’t have our physical doors open today because this damn virus got us. But we’re having sales online! Our masks, candles, even that fancy wreath is on sale! Candle holders, vases, pots, so many pretty things are on sale. Plus, when you spend $100 you automatically get an additional 10% off, no code needed. Check out our stories today or go to the link in our bio to shop our website. Shop small and help keep small businesses alive this holiday season. If you don’t own a retail shop you may not know this, but many shops rely on the holiday season to get them through the winter into spring. I mean, really rely on it. Please spend your money locally if you don’t want to see a bunch of empty storefronts around nashville come February. I’m not talking about us, we have flower delivery business. We’ll be ok. If you only have $20 to spend spend it at some other little retail shop in your neighborhood. Just shop small this year of all years. Do it for your community.

It’s a new day! We have a new president and for the very first time, a woman is headed to the White House. Not just any woman, but a woman of color. I imagine that Vice President elect Kamala Harris would use this emoji: 💁🏽‍♀️ when texting with friends and loved ones. And while Kamala and I have different racial and ethnic backgrounds, that’s the same emoji I use and that is very powerful to me.
While I’m excited about this win and excited about there once again being some color in the White House I also have not so quickly forgotten the backlash that was the result of the last black person in the White House.
So I’ll celebrate this win and revel in this win and I will THANK BLACK WOMEN for their help in providing us with this historic win, but I will not allow myself to believe the fight is over. I will take this win as a substantial victory and an opportunity to celebrate in order to reinvigorate myself and steel myself for the many small and large fights ahead. Because I know that I will need to fight for the rest of my life if I want my country to live up to the promise of it’s conception sometime in my daughter’s lifetime. I hope you all will too.

In the quick tutorial I did with I talked briefly about color. I talked about picking a range and sticking within in. This doesn’t necessarily mean monochromatic. This arrangement (made by our designer, Kristin) is a perfect example. It ranges from orange to white and it does that by picking up colors that exist between orange and white. You can see various shades of orange and peach into shades of yellow, tan, taupe and even some pink. Each flower picks up colors from another flower in the arrangement. The white cosmo works perfectly due to its little yellow center. The pink in the dahlia works off the more subtle tones of pink in the peach spray roses. The tiny bit of yellow in the zinnia plays off the citron rose and also the yellow deeper in the petals of the peach spray roses. No flower is ever just one color except maybe a small handful of white flowers. Most have many colors in their petals and you can bring out those colors when you arrange them well.

Was this just a thing at my high school or did you guys get a lot of “don’t change 4 any 1”s in you year books? I don’t know why but I thought about that the other day and how terrible that advice is! I guess maybe if you’re emphasizing the “4 any 1” part it can be justified. Changing just for the sake of someone else is never the best idea but how randomly specific is that advice? I definitely read it as, “don’t change who you are” full stop. And now that I’m 35 I can’t imagine worse advice. Changing based on new information, on new insight, on realizations of trauma or bad habits, is a good thing. It’s a necessary thing. It’s growth. Can you imagine how ridiculous we’d all be if we “never changed 4 any 1” since high school? We all know those people who kind of seem to have taken that old high school advice to heart. Right now it kind of feels like America is trying to decide if it’s the guy who takes that advice to heart and doesn’t “change 4 any 1” or if we’re going to grow.
Anyway, just a random thought I had in the shower and it felt relevant to our current times.

It’s wedding week! This one is one of my favorites. The clients are some of the sweetest people I have ever met. I had been looking forward to this wedding since last year and when covid made it clear that things would need to change it was a serious bummer. But this family rolled with the punches even when a hurricane threatened to ruin their outdoor ceremony dreams. called to see if we could maybe move the ceremony to Friday instead to beat the weather. When the guest list is so small you can do things like that! So we’re making it happen! Wrapping my brain around the timeline change and breaking a wedding up into two days is hard but it’s all so pretty and these clients are so worth the extra effort. Follow along in our stories!

I want to know your voting plan! Tell me about it in the comments.
I’m going to vote early at the Margret Maddox Ymca on October 15th at 6pm and I’m inviting you to come with me. Or create your own voting date with your friends. Maybe get margaritas after (on an open, well ventilated, outdoor patio)! Did you know you can vote at any of the early voting locations when you vote early? Early voting starts on the 14th. Don’t wait. Get some friends and make a thing out of it. Or just squeeze it in when you can make it happen because there probably won’t be a line if you vote early. Whatever your plan is I want to hear it.
