200 years ago, the nation had reached a political climax surrounding the presidential election. Four candidates stood to gain the presidency: John Quincy Adams of
Massachusetts, Henry Clay of Kentucky, William Crawford of Georgia, and Andrew Jackson of Tennessee. The Marquis de Lafayette’s 1824 Farewell Tour helped advance Jackson’s chances slightly. The famous Frenchman reminded Americans of their past, fight for freedom and the ideals of the Revolution – a tie to which Jackson was the only candidate to. Americans still had their concerns about Jackson. He was a duelist, gambler, rough around the edges whose, as Robert Remini wrote, “entire career seemed to contradict the most basic democratic processes for which this country stood.” With each of the candidates representing a different portion of the nation, none would secure the necessary electoral votes to win, sending the election to the House of Representatives. Jackson, though, emerged with the most popular and electoral votes of the four, but in the end, the House declared the educated, more politically experienced, John Quincy Adams as the sixth president of the United States of America.

Have you ever been to The Hermitage during the Christmas Season? We have a traditional Christmas tree in the breezeway, but not in the mansion. Wonder why? Christmas trees did not become popular until the Victorian Era, so the Jackson family would not have had one in their home during the General’s life. Decorations would have included greenery, pinecones, and berries collected from the surrounding yard. This authentic décor can be seen outside and inside the Mansion while this season when you come explore The Hermitage. Don’t miss your chance to experience Christmas as the Jackson’s did, as the mansion is only decorated from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day!
