I look at this photograph and see so much.

I see my grandmother.

I see her in my cheeks and jawline, and in the paint and wallpaper on the walls that I chose because they remind me of her. I think about Saturday mornings as a child when she would take me downtown to the old Castner Knott for sewing lessons. I think about my mother, years later, saying with equal parts affection and exasperation, “You’re just like your grandmother.”

I also see the flowers. And in them, I see the various women who grew them. I see years of texts, emails, questions, invoices, deliveries, and countless gasps over their beauty.

I see a small business in the middle of a slow summer month. The financial stress that comes with quiet weeks. The choice not to quit, and to keep showing up anyway.

And then, almost as an afterthought, I notice myself.

For years, it felt far better to hide behind my work than to stand beside it. Every time I chose to leave myself out of the frame, it was a small act of self-erasure.

Fear of taking up too much space.

Fear that people would think I’m dramatic. Self-absorbed. Not attractive enough. Awkward. Too much.

Somewhere along the way, I was able to acknowledge - and even delight in - the fact that I’m not for everyone. That I live and love in a way that is specific and beautiful to me.

I realized I wasn’t competing with the flowers for attention.

We belong in the same story. They tell people what I love.

My presence tells them who loved them enough to make them.
