Only a few days remain to secure your seats to the Naperville Chorus's spring concert, "Ein Deutsches Requiem" by Johannes Brahms, this Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Wentz Concert Hall! This German Requiem, composed shorting after the death of Brahms' mother, contrasts with earlier requiems by focusing on the living, with a theme of the transition from anxiety to comfort. It is an uplifting exploration of spirituality and is one of the greatest choral masterpieces of all time. The Naperville Chorus has a wide repertoire, performing a variety of music since 1976. The chorus focuses on classic choral works, often including elements of gospel, jazz, Broadway, and other genres. Next month, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra's "Mexican Montage" celebrates the vibrant cultural heritage of our neighbors to the south, opening with Aaron Copland’s well-known "El Salón México," written after Carlos Chávez took the American composer to a nightclub in Mexico City in 1932. The concert continues with alluring works by prominent Mexican composers - Arturo Marquez, Manuel Ponce, and Silvestre Revueltas - along with Chávez’s consummate "Piano Concerto," performed by Concert Artists Guild International Competition Winner Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner, a young artist with “masterful technique and a veritable deluge of sonorities” (La Presse Montreal). In one month, the Chicago Sinfonietta's season finale pays tribute to those that allow us to transform our artform for the better. The opening work, Green’s "In the Beginning," “explores the excitement of new worlds forming, colliding, and shifting into place.” Hailstork’s "Saxophone Concerto," composed for soloist Timothy McAllister, promises a colorful tonal exploration. Finally, Tchaikovsky’s deeply emotional "Symphony No. 4," described by the composer as a depiction of the nature of Fate, features the famous ominous opening brass fanfare and transitions to a bright energy in the finale, bringing the Sinfonietta's season to its conclusion.
