Only one week remains until North Central College Jazz Studies Coordinator Juan Pastor celebrates the release of “Memorias,” the fifth album with his ensemble Chinchano! Blending Afro-Peruvian rhythms, Andean influences, and contemporary jazz, “Memorias” is Pastor’s most personal and mature work to date – honoring family, tradition, and identity through song. Featuring pianist Stu Mindeman, bassist Matt Ulery, and saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, the band delivers a powerful mix of lyrical melodies, rich textures, and high-energy improvisation. From the evocative “Celinda,” dedicated to Pastor’s grandmother, to the festive “Qué Frío,” “Memorias” captures both reflection and celebration. Don’t miss this one-night performance of Chinchano’s new music before its official album release on October 3, 2025. Join us for a night of music and dance! Bomba y Plena are music genres that originate in Puerto Rico and are two distinct, but related, Afro-Puerto Rican musical traditions and associated dances, rooted in the island's colonial past, which are often performed together and represent a form of cultural expression and resistance. Enjoy Puerto Rican food and learn how to dance Bomba y Plena as we celebrate the end of Latin American Heritage Month! In one month, the NCC Faculty Recital Series continues with the Wentz Concert Hall debut of tenor Dr. Aaron Short, who joined our voice faculty last year! Dr. Short joins piano faculty Susan Chou for Schubert’s “Die schöne Müllerin,” the song cycle that follows a young miller as he wanders along a sparkling river, dreams of love with a miller’s daughter, experiences joy and longing, and ultimately confronts heartbreak. This recital offers an evening of music that brings Schubert’s storytelling and the miller’s emotional journey vividly to life, marking Dr. Short’s first appearance in the series.
