Of all the things I get to create, funeral flowers have become the work that means the most to me. I think a lot of that has to do with my life before floristry.

Before The Petal Parlour, I spent years working as a nurse in nursing homes. At the bedside, I cared for many people as they completed their journey through this life, and quietly supported their families as they navigated those final hours with their loved ones.

Death is a very familiar face to me.

I’ve never seen the end of life as only something frightening. It is heartbreaking, of course, but I’ve always found something deeply meaningful in that transition from this life to what comes next. There can be so much love, tenderness, and beauty wrapped up in something so incredibly sad.

That’s a big part of why sympathy and funeral work means so much to me now. It gives me another way to offer a small bit of comfort to people during the hardest moments of their lives. I get to listen to stories about the person they loved, learn what made them who they were, and create something that feels personal to the life being honored.

I find the act of sending flowers to a funeral so beautifully human. For centuries, across all cultures, people have honored and mourned their loved ones with flowers and other beautiful things. When there are no words to make it better, we still feel this deep instinctual need to bring something.

Being trusted to create someone’s final flowers is something I take very seriously. Helping create something beautiful in the middle of so much sadness is a responsibility I’ll always hold close, and never take for granted.

When you trust The Petal Parlour with floral arrangements for someone you love, I hope you know they’re being created with a whole lot of care, intention, and so much heart. 🤍

So, how did that flower arrangement end up on your kitchen table? It’s easy to look at a finished arrangement and only think about the flowers sitting in the vase, but there’s an entire industry behind those flowers.

Many of the flowers you love aren’t grown anywhere close to home. They start their journey on farms hundreds or even thousands of miles away, where they are grown, harvested, sorted, processed, and carefully packed all by human hands.

The second a flower is cut, a race against time begins. Fresh flowers are kept cool to slow the aging process, loaded onto cargo planes, flown into major distribution hubs, cleared through customs, and moved again by refrigerated trucks before finally reaching wholesalers across the country. All of that has to happen quickly enough to get them to us with plenty of vase life still ahead of them.

By the time those flowers make it to my little cooler, they’ve traveled a long way. Then they’re unpacked, cleaned, trimmed, hydrated, conditioned, stored, and cared for until they’re finally ready for me to turn them into something beautiful and send them on the last leg of their journey to you.

So yeah, flowers can be expensive. But that price represents a whole lot more than the stems you see in the vase. There’s an entire global industry working behind the scenes to get something as delicate and perishable as a flower from a field thousands of miles away to your kitchen table.
