Our friend Stephen Woo has done it again. First, he surprised us with that beautiful watercolor of our tasting room — and now this: a lovely piece inspired by the Murphys Pokey, almost right next door to us.
And just to set the story straight — this one isn’t about gold or quartz, but about justice, small-town style.
The Murphys Pokey (yes, spelled just like it sounds) was the town’s original jail, built during the Gold Rush era, when Murphys was booming with miners, merchants, saloons… and, naturally, the occasional troublemaker. Dating back to the mid-1800s, this tiny stone jail held those who had maybe one drink too many or bent the rules a little too far. It was never meant to be grand — just sturdy enough to keep order in a fast-growing mining town.
Small, solid, and a little intimidating, the Pokey is one of those landmarks that quietly tells you: this town has stories. Real ones. Human ones.
I love how Stephen captures not just places, but feeling. History softened by color. Stories told without words.
This tasting room has a way of attracting art, stories, and generous souls — and I never take that for granted. Stephen, thank you once again for sharing your talent and for seeing Murphys the way we do: small, soulful, and full of history.
