After years of designing large scale installations, I’m still questioning, experimenting, and looking for different ways to approach the work.

That was the heart of my recent hands-on class at Longwood Gardens, where we explored traditional floral mechanics alongside more sustainable approaches.

Because before you build something big, there’s a lot to think about:

Concept. Space. Scale. Color. Flowers. Mechanics. Construction and everything in between!

And the mechanics? They’re not an afterthought. They’re part of the design.

There isn’t always one right way to build something. Sometimes the best place to start is simply by asking better questions.

And then… build. 💪💐💐💐

Sometimes “going to work” looks like this.

Thank you Longwood Gardens and to all my assistants, flower and mechanic partners and students!

I recently had the opportunity to teach a hands-on floral installation class at Longwood Gardens, exploring something I’ve been thinking about throughout my 25+ years in floral design: how we build.

We explored traditional floral mechanics alongside more sustainable approaches thank you to New Age Floral not to decide which is “right,” but to thoughtfully consider why we use them and when another approach might make sense.

We built, experimented, problem-solved, and got our hands dirty along the way with the most STUNNING locally grown flowers thanks to Philadelphia Floral Guild - Serving PA, NJ, DE & NY Florists

I’m grateful for the opportunity to share ideas, learn together, and start some really good conversations.

Nothing better than giving back and teaching children about hands on skills! I’m a strong believer that kids do best when they get their hands dirty and get to creative!

This incredible event brought together designers and flower farmers from across the country to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and impact of American Grown Flowers .
