Young and Dumb

I’ve played paintball thirty years and more,
Since masks were foggy and fields were war.
Back when I was young, fast, and numb,
A dangerous mix of young and dumb.

I’d dive through brush, I'd charge the hill,
Certain that guts could outrun skill.
A welt or bruise? I'd laugh and grin,
Then do the same darn thing again.

Now sixty's come and made it clear,
This is a young man's game, I fear.
My knees file complaints, my back says "no,"
And every bunker sits way too low.

The youngsters sprint like they're shot from guns,
While I stretch first and discuss my buns.
They slide through mud with reckless cheer,
I check my pulse and adjust my gear.

But one thing Father Time can't steal,
Or rust away like an old axle seal.
My trigger finger's still quick as light,
And it still works pretty darn good in a fight.

The young bucks laugh till the paintballs fly,
Then suddenly wonder, "How'd that guy..."
Because experience, I've come to find,
Can still embarrass the youthful kind.

Sometimes I wish for the days long gone,
When I'd play all day from dusk till dawn.
When I was fearless, strong, and numb,
That glorious season of young and dumb.

But truth be told, I wouldn't trade
The memories earned or friends I've made.
For though I'm older, slower, and gray,
I'm still playing paintball today.

And when they ask why I still come,
At sixty-plus, instead of staying home,
I grin and say, "Because it's fun—
And growing old ain't the same as done

life as a field owner or referee

There’s bravery found on battlefields,
And legends born in pain…
But nothing tests a paintball man
Like shots below the frame.

You’ll hear a guy scream, “MOVE UP!” loud,
All fearless, tough, and proud—
Till one rogue ball comes screaming in
And drops him to the ground.

His marker falls. Time slows right down.
The angels start to peek.
And suddenly this mighty warrior
Can no longer even speak.

One knee buried in the gravel,
Both hands protecting pride,
Trying to breathe through noises
No grown man should provide.

Now kids will laugh and holler,
“Ref! I got hit down there!”
And I just kinda look at them
With that thousand-yard-field stare.

Because after all these years of reffing,
I’ve learned one simple thing:
Buddy… if you’re still standing up,
You didn’t catch the sting.

A real groin shot changes futures.
It rewrites family trees.
Grown men suddenly find religion
And collapse straight to their knees.

You don’t walk that one off smiling.
You don’t jog back for more.
You make sounds like an injured moose
And reconsider war.

Yet somehow, give it fifteen minutes,
A drink, and wounded pride…
And paintball players load back up
For another reckless ride.
