Let’s talk beneficial bugs!

This year has been one heck of a year for pests. I’ve had just about everything in the garden, thrips, broad mites, spider mites, aphids of all kinds and colors, cucumber beetles and wireworm in the soil.

In the past I’ve used sprays on the dahlias, primarily organic only resorting to chemicals on plants with extreme cases or circumstances.

Spraying to control pests is time consuming and often times whether it’s organic or not kills the good bugs too. This year I decided to do try beneficial bugs. Since I’m dealing with every bad bug under the sun it feels like I’ve applied a couple times so far and with a range of beneficial.

Cucumeris- for thrips control
Californicus- predatory mite for a wide range of things
Persimilis- for spider mite control
Lacewing larvae- for aphid control
Lalgaurd m52- wireworm control

We are lucky enough to be close to Sound Horticulture and I get everything through them which has been great! It also helps that they answer all my questions. ☺️

Everyone has their own way of doing their garden and keeping their plants healthy and that’s okay! If you’ve been thinking about using beneficial I definitely would recommend it. It’s fairly easy and so much less time consuming than spraying each and every plant top to bottom.

Stand Open Saturday!

Gathered in the Storm...

The rain is here, and that means we were harvesting our fields early this morning, gathering every open bloom.

Tomorrow, our Mount Vernon flower stand will be overflowing with rain-kissed dahlias and seasonal flowers, freshly cut and ready to bring beauty into your home while the skies are gray.

All the zinnias!

Here are the two separate beds of zinnias I planted this year. The first is a much brighter coral peach hued mix while the second is a more muted pastel mix. I’ll post videos of each bed as well.

If all goes as planned I’ll have seeds available in the winter. Please do note that these will be sold as a farm mix. These were open and cross pollinated by the bees. Some may come back with traits similar to the parent plant, others won’t and others may be absolute gems!

Have you ever heard of dahlia glimmer? I first discovered it last year while touring dahlia patch last fall with my mom and sister. This beauty immediately caught my eye because the petals had the most iridescent sparkle I’ve ever seen!

Some dahlias glimmer like this because of tiny microscopic ridges on their petals. When light hits just right, they reflect a shimmering, magical glow.

Happy Monday everyone!

I’ve got bouquets out at the stand on Allen West Road today but we are adding some new things! I have some kid helpers who have been putting veggies and fruit out at the stand but also trying their hands at bouquets and they’ve been having a lot of fun (with lots of supervision)! They’ve really enjoyed it and it is a great way to teach them. So here’s a few things to know,

- Anything they helped with will be labeled or have a little note indicating so
- Any money made from things they’ve helped with goes to them and to their piggy banks which is their favorite part 😆
- These bouquets will be in jars to go so please do take the jars if you like as the bouquet is already made in the jar! If not leave your jar or bring it back and we will reuse it.

To those of you that have bought some of these items done by the kids a HUGE thank you! It’s brought a lot of joy and a good dose of self confidence to each of them. ☺️
