Today we’re going purple for Spirit Day. 💜 It began in 2010 as a stand against bullying of LGBTQIA+ young people.

We want q***r kids to know there are adults who have their backs. Adults who use the names and pronouns they ask for, speak up when somebody is cruel, and listen when things get hard. Those are the adults we want to be, on Spirit Day and every other day.

If you’re an LGBTQ young person reading this, we’re so freaking glad you’re here. We’re rooting for you every step of the way!

Lucy (she/her) + Cory (they/them) shared their first looks and private vows beneath the alder trees at A&K Alder Farm. 🥹

There was so much emotion in that moment, seeing each other, speaking words meant just for them, and letting it all sink in. Getting to witness something so personal and preserve it in photographs is exactly why we do this.

Q***r love is real, powerful, and so freaking valid. Lucy + Cory, we love you two so much! 💛

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we acknowledge that the Skagit land we call home is part of the ancestral homelands of Coast Salish peoples, including the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe, and Samish Indian Nation. These nations are here today, and we respect their sovereignty and ongoing care for this place. We are so grateful to live here.

We photograph q***r love here, and we want to remember that q***r Indigenous people were here long before us. In many Indigenous nations, people now described as Two-Spirit held valued roles in their communities. Colonization tried to erase those roles through violence and forced assimilation. Indigenous organizers adopted the term “Two-Spirit” in 1990, but the people and their histories are much older than the word.

And they’re here now: reclaiming traditions, leading communities, and telling their own stories. Every nation has its own understandings, and not every q***r Indigenous person uses the term Two-Spirit.

Today is National Coming Out Day which was first observed on October 11, 1988, one year after the National March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights. 💛

Coming out isn’t always one big announcement. It can be a hundred different decisions about who knows what, and when. Those choices belong to the person making them.

We’re grateful we get to be open about being a wife + wife team here. We also know that being visible isn’t equally safe or possible for everyone. Your q***rness doesn’t need an audience to be real.

We said we’d spend October sharing q***r history. Today, for International Le***an Day, we’re talking about Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. 💜

In 1955, they helped found the Daughters of Bilitis, the first le***an rights organization in the United States. They later edited The Ladder, a magazine that connected le***ans across the country.

By the time they legally married at San Francisco City Hall in 2008, they’d been together for 55 years and spent decades organizing, writing, and building community. Their wedding was one chapter of a much bigger story.

Today we’re celebrating Del and Phyllis, and all the le***ans whose work keeps opening doors for the next generation. Whose story do you wish more people knew?
