Put it on your calendar the District #1 Schoolhouse will be hosting their annual pie auction on August 7. We hope you will be able to join us for a fun filled night that includes food to purchase, the wonderful Community Band and pies from our amazing local bakers to be auctioned off!

As the District #1 Schoolhouse Program comes to a close for another successful season, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible music students who helped us out. Our heavy desks needed to be moved and put away so the schoolhouse can be used by the community for graduation parties and other upcoming events. So we reached out to the music program to see if some of the students planning to travel to London in 2026 would be willing to lend a hand and we could provide financial support for their trip. Well, Colin McBain, Abby Schwoerer, Aurora Jabs, Olivia Coffey, Jake Lawrence, Geoffrey Lawrence, and Jack Alcorn truly rose to the occasion. They jumped right in and moved all the desks and other furniture in just 30 minutes. So if you're looking for help with a project or other tasks, we highly recommend reaching out to the Mount Horeb Music Department and hiring their students to help you and provide financial support for their trip.

Back in 1893, schoolhouses were the place to be for knowledge, but family tools were the real deal! They taught kids to be independent, while homesteading was all about perseverance. Laundry day was a community effort, and playtime? That was just the icing on the cake, reflecting the joy of exploration!

What a thrill it is when the weather is this wonderful and lunch at the schoolhouse turns into a picnic! Not only do the kids enjoy it but so do the volunteers! Check out the students in their 1893 clothes!

Holes in socks, who hasn't been there? These kids did a fantastic job learning to thread a needle and use a darning egg to darn a sock. They also picked up leather sewing skills and mastered the straight stitch and whip stitch.

Rope making has taken over the schoolhouse and the students are loving every minute of it. As one student exclaimed "This is the so cool, can I make another rope?" Watch the rope jumpers show off their skills with their brand new rope.

Students appreciated learning about the significance of braiding cloth and rope in 1893. They discovered how to utilize a braiding wheel and received their own to take home.

District #1 Old Schoolhouse is abuzz with excitement as the new schoolhouse program begins. Witnessing students excitement while shelling and grinding corn shows the fun of doing “chores” in the home life station. Students also brought corn cob dolls to life at this station.

Kids toil away at their "chores", but we make sure they remember that 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'! After their tasks are done, they get to play with some cool 1890's toys!
