Fragrant and delicate brushes of hyacinths appear in gardens in the spring among the first, but their life is short. Since ancient times, mankind has sought to prolong this charm. An agricultural technique by which a plant is artificially brought out of a state of dormancy, its growth is accelerated and it is forced to bloom and bear fruit at an unusual time for the crop is called forcing. For successful forcing, the bulbs must be properly selected and prepared. Forcing of hyacinths begins in the fall, and modern technologies allow obtaining hyacinth flowers from the end of December to May.

Hyacinths can be bred by seeds and bulbs. Seeds are mainly used by breeders to obtain new varieties; this is a rather lengthy process, since hyacinths grown from seeds bloom only in the fifth or sixth year.

A properly grown hyacinth must meet the following requirements: its leaves must rise obliquely upwards, directed evenly in all directions, the stem must stand straight and not get tangled with the leaves; the more flowers, the better; the inflorescence must be smooth, slightly conical or cylindrical; the flowers must be located horizontally, not hanging down.

The most famous is the oriental hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis), growing wild in Dalmatia, Greece and Asia Minor, where it blooms in the earliest spring. Its cultivation in Europe became especially popular since the 15th century; since then, over three hundred high-quality varieties have been bred. But the total number of varieties is much greater: they number in the thousands and new ones are obtained every year. Hyacinth inflorescences come in a variety of colors: white, yellow, red and pink of various shades, blue, purple and blue to almost black; there are varieties with variegated colors. There are double and simple hyacinths; the latter are usually larger and often have a regular shape.

The bulb is dense, consisting of fleshy lower leaves, occupying the entire circumference of the bulb base with their bases. The flowering stem is a direct continuation of the base, which is nothing more than the lower, strongly shortened and thick part of the stem.
