Happy Kwanzaa, Monroe!

Today marks the First Day of Kwanzaa, and we celebrate the principle of Umoja (Unity). Umoja encourages us to strive for and maintain unity in our family, community, nation, and race. This principle reminds us of the strength that comes from working together, supporting one another, and fostering a spirit of collaboration.

As we light the first candle of the kinara, let us reflect on the value of unity in our diverse and vibrant Monroe community. When we come together, we build a stronger, more inclusive city where everyone can thrive.

Kwanzaa is a time of reflection, family, and cultural celebration that enriches us all. May the principles of this day inspire us to nurture connections and uplift our shared community.

"Habari Gani?" (What's the News?) The answer today is Umoja!

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous and meaningful start to Kwanzaa.

A Brighter Future for Monroe: Illuminating Communities for Safety and Growth

As a proud member of the Monroe City Council, I, Councilmember Franco McGee, am thrilled to acknowledge the City of Monroe’s ambitious initiative to replace aging streetlights with energy-efficient LED lighting. This effort, spearheaded through the Wi******er Revitalization Committee and built upon the foundational work of the Public Enterprise Committee, represents a critical step in our ongoing commitment to enhancing safety, beautifying our neighborhoods, and fostering a vibrant, thriving community.

This project isn't just about brighter streets—it's about building safer, more connected neighborhoods. Research has consistently shown that well-lit communities experience lower crime rates. A study from the University of Chicago Crime Lab, for example, found that improved street lighting led to a 36% reduction in violent crime in impacted areas. By increasing visibility, we’re not only deterring unlawful activity but also creating spaces where families feel secure, children can play freely, and businesses can flourish.

The Wi******er neighborhood is leading the way, with 173 high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights being replaced with modern LEDs. This initiative is part of the Wi******er Revitalization Project, which prioritizes sustainable, long-term quality of life improvements. Beyond aesthetics, LED lighting offers numerous benefits:

Safety: LED lights provide better visibility, reducing hazards for pedestrians and drivers.

Energy Efficiency: LEDs consume significantly less energy, making them environmentally and financially sustainable.

Cost-Effectiveness: With a longer lifespan and lower maintenance needs, LEDs are a sound investment for the future.

This upgrade is not the end—it's a bold beginning. We envision these efforts as the first in a series of community-centered initiatives aimed at tackling systemic issues like gun violence and other violent crimes. Illuminating our streets is a symbolic and practical step toward reclaiming our public spaces for peace, safety, and unity.

We are incredibly proud to see this project take center stage and extend heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders—City staff, the Energy Services Department, and residents—for their dedication to Monroe’s growth. Let’s continue to shine a light on the path toward a brighter future together.

Together, we illuminate. Together, we thrive.

Call to Action: Combating Gun Violence in Our Community

On June 25, 2024, a community leader called on elected officials to support collaborative efforts to address the gun violence that has long troubled our community, especially during the summer months.
Below is my response to her call, as I seek to engage our city council, staff, and community members in creating a comprehensive strategic plan.

[Dear Selina Campbell,

Thank you for your email and for your unwavering dedication to our community.
I deeply admire your commitment to addressing the gaps many of us struggle to fill.
Partnerships with organizations like yours are essential as we work proactively to tackle the rise in gun violence that often escalates during the summer.

I am eager to learn more about your initiatives and the potential of forming a Mayoral committee, spearheaded by Mayor Burns, to address this critical issue.
A committee composed of nonprofits, local elected leaders, Monroe Police, and both public and private sector partners could make substantial progress in creating a safer, more resilient Monroe.

Your work is vital, and I am fully committed to supporting your mission to ensure the safety of our community this summer.
Gun violence impacts us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is our collective responsibility to prevent it.

Thank you again for reaching out. I look forward to collaborating with you and supporting your efforts.

Best regards,
Councilmember Franco McGee]

These issues remain a significant concern, and I am actively working to support grassroots organizations in their efforts to find alternative solutions.
Together, we can empower communities and families to end senseless violence, while improving de-escalation tactics and problem-solving skills.

Gun violence is not just a city problem; it’s a community problem.
It is our shared responsibility to address this crisis.

Who is willing to join me in forming a strategic plan to move forward and make our city safer for everyone?
