Speed History lives on here!

Today October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager proved it was possible to fly faster than the speed of sound in the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis," reaching Mach 1.06.

The Bell-X1 was the first in series of supersonic aircraft which continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in aviation. As Chuck Yeager said, "The real barrier wasn't in the sky but in our knowledge and experience of supersonic flight."

My uncle was stationed with Yeager during some of those days, thank you to all those who brought us into the space age and the next level of speed.

Big D Cycle gives their Bonneville experience…

“A better late than never Bonneville report on our Triumph T150 Production Pushrod racer. We were back at Bonneville for the first time in over ten years. Speedweek in August is a gearheads dream. The cars, the bikes and the people make it one of the best events in motor racing each year. The P-PP 750 record was 127.301 mph. We did our best to go fast but left Speedweek with the best run of 127.111 mph just 2/10ths off the record. The changing conditions and hot weather made tuning quite the challenge. We were sure the bike would go fast so the team returned for the SCTA World Finals in September. Cooler weather but with the rain a few days before the meet the salt conditions would be in question but it turned out to be better than Speedweek. We made a few passes at 125mph but never over the record. A gearing change back to the same as when we ran at Speedweek put us over the record at 128.515 mph and qualified for a record return run. The temperature dropped 10 degrees during our time waiting to make our return run which made us second guess the jetting but we stayed with the current set up. On the return run Ryan gave it his best and came through with a 132.799 mph giving Big D the new record of 130.657 mph.

This weekend we did a little detour from the LSR world to go spend the weekend at our favorite vintage motorcycle event, The Barber Vintage Festival!

While hanging out with some of our racing heroes like David Aldana, Kenny Roberts Jr and Sr and Kevin Schwantz, we couldn’t help but spot the Don Vesco Streamliner tucked up on the wall of the Museum. An epic weekend that even Hurricane Isaias couldn’t spoil!

Looking good Red! Keep up the good work!

“Red had PT today and practiced walking with a cane (with a harness on). He did really good!

The most exciting part of Red’s day was going in his Shop and checking out the new upholstery in the ‘36 he just finished. Thanks to Jay for going with Red to drop the car off in July and to Art for picking up the car and bringing it back to Red’s Shop today!!!

Red has lots of appointments and about an hour drive each way, so we have been real busy. Our neighbor, Wilma has been going with us, which has been extremely helpful.

“UPDATE:
Amazing CMR Kiwi Can Do Team were ready to start test runs yesterday as per schedule.........then got the news race fuel, purchased a month ago, would not be arrive on time.

🔘Flights home had already extended. Could the Team extend further?
🔘We need a full team in place and key people to race the Streamliners.
🔘How to circumvent the issues and get the fuel to Uyuni asap
🔘Emergency stations!

This adventure is the gift that keeps giving with yet another test of Kiwi resilience and solution finding.
Never give up!

We have lost a few more days but SAVED THE EVENT.

Test runs now start Sunday 11th with race days between 12th and 21st October.

Meantime, no time is wasted. There's a multitude of daily tasks for over 50 self funded volunteers on site: checks, re checks, turn around practise, dyno testing, fine tuning, parachute packing and re packing, data analysis etc etc.

Lunch and fitness challenges break the day, and always two people overnight on site. No shortage of volunteers for THAT task!”
