Total Fest

Total Fest We still host a record swap! All Total Fest bands played half-hour or less sets.

Total Fest was an all-ages, volunteer-run, nonprofit music festival that brought together creative non-commercial musicians and fans for three-days of great music and times.

We highly recommend both following this page, and going to the actual thing in July. Anderson in the Bitterrroot foothills sounds entirely too amazing to miss! Last year was over the top great.

And you thought we’d been teleported to a Waffle House in Georgia. No! We’ve been quietly chopping wood and carrying water in order to bring you an amazing line up. Stay tuned for exciting artist announcements this week! ⛰️🔱

Mandator if you're anywhere nearby. You know Tom Dewar made all our official posters, right?

Hope you can join us this Saturday, March 14 from 3 :to 6 PM when we’ll host the opening reception for Georgetown artist Tom Dewar’s exhibition, Stock Car and Drag Racing Posters. Influenced by hot rod cartoonists like Robert Williams and Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Dewar has also worked as a pit mechanic on the regional sports car circuit. His imaginative prints have broad appeal just as racing season commences. See you all soon.

American primitive guitarist Marisa Anderson joins the 2026 Woodtick lineup. Her neo-Americana style is both refined and rambling, luminous and stark. "Without a word she sings" - Pitchfork

Back in simpler times before the The White Stripes were a global phenomenon and every 9-year-old could sing Seven Nation Army, there was a classically crusty place in downtown Missoula called Jay's Upstairs, and it was a great spot where touring punk/garage and indie bands constantly played. The bathrooms stank, the floor might've given out if it continued to be a venue, and memories/mistakes were made!

Importantly, there was also an enterprising record store owner (Ear Candy Music) and garage music fan and musician (Helltones/Everyday Sinners/ etc. currently with the Sasha Bell Band) named John Fleming. John put the early (Sympathy for the Record Industry) White Stripes releases into more hands in Missoula than I imagine any other indie record, (or CD actually, in those days) for probably a solid year, really shoring up their local fan base here, and we think promoting the first handful of White Stripes Missoula shows.

Also, the first two Total Fests were at Jay's. But no White Stripes.

Have Blues, Will Travel

From the White Stripes’ first headline tour, on the road promoting the upcoming release of their second album, De Stijl.  This show in Missoula took place in the middle of a three-week journey from Michigan through Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana, Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois.  Like itinerant musicians, they were traveling in a van, sleeping on sofas, and selling merch for breakfast and gas money. Performing music that was a bit of garage, a bit of country and folk, a bit of punk, and a lot of the blues.

It's clear that Earthless got on our radar because they shred. Guitar, bass, drums, all shred, and we just got recognized as one of their top fans. I mean, that and $2.99 can get you some popcorn at a gas station. But have you listened to them cover Cherry Red by the Groundhogs. OMG. DO IT!

BUMMER NEWS UPDATE: Dug hit the van trouble wall and are stuck in Dickinson ND slurping Lemon Fizzbang and scarfing steak at Applebees. There's some might silver dollar flaps available for those who linger long enough.
Van troubles are real. Support your DIY touring friends, friends.

The show is still happening tonight so hope y'all can keep the cave emerging momentum going and support some stellar locals.

Dig on Dug. That’s probably all that needs to be said, but I’m not one for brevity.

One of the benefits of Total Fest was the built in “holy sh*t” moments as bands peppered the radar. Building’s 2011 Melt, Cry, Sleep was one of those moments for me. A few emails, a fiendish tour with Hawks, some sketchy cats messing with them all weekend, and, the rest, as they say is history. Like many, I was bummed when Buildings announced they were hanging up the cleats. It happens, though, right. Things run their course, and we just need to adapt.

Well, we likely shouldn’t approach all things that way, but I digress …

Back in 21, when the stick wielding swashbuckler Travis Kuhlman announced that he had a new project and that their album would be on TGIC, I hit the pre-order button before the preview was done. Joined by Michael Baillie (guitar), Dug was just the face slap that I needed at the time. Thick in the pandemic without much of sense that there would be an end, Dug dangled the familiar and then brutally contrasted it with a purgatorial, tonal drip. It’s a sonic Rothko, just layer after layer of thick, guttural, sludge evidencing the listless and Groundhog day feel of the entire Covid experience.

They’re not locked in as some time-capsuled curiosity. Relentlessly touring, they’ve blossomed with releases in 2022 and 2023, digging themselves deeper into the soil and shooting tendrils into the very groundwater that nourishes every lumbering second of every Sisyphean day of every mise en abyme year. Like time, they show no evidence of slowing down.

Dug is a thunderous force. Straight up pummeling. I’ve not had the opportunity to see them live until now. The reports from Caterwaul and videos I’ve seen confirm that they exceed translation and pied-piper you to grabbing those ear plugs and immersing yourself in wave after wave after wave of brute force.

The thing I miss most about Total Fest is the annual reunion that came with it. Old and new friends on repeat. Horizonless and endless summers. Again, things run their course, and time moves whether we do or not. Though there are certainly longer intervals at play here, it’s pretty awesome that there’s a familiar landing spot for old and new connections. Hope y’all can shake off some mid-week rust and get your sludge on. It does a weary soul good.

Too sad to comment.

The fierce frontman of numerous local bands, including the Planes Mistaken for Stars side-project Git Some, died on January 1 at the age of 49.
